Boxer Impeachment Letter
Boxer senator online ^ | 12/19/2005 | Barbara Boxer

Posted on 12/19/2005 6:48:51 PM PST by stocksthatgoup

Boxer’s letter is as follows:

On December 16, along with the rest of America, I learned that President Bush authorized the National Security Agency to spy on Americans without getting a warrant from a judge. President Bush underscored his support for this action in his press conference today.

On Sunday, December 18, former White House Counsel John Dean and I participated in a public discussion that covered many issues, including this surveillance. Mr. Dean, who was President Nixon’s counsel at the time of Watergate, said that President Bush is “the first President to admit to an impeachable offense.” Today, Mr. Dean confirmed his statement.

This startling assertion by Mr. Dean is especially poignant because he experienced first hand the executive abuse of power and a presidential scandal arising from the surveillance of American citizens.

Given your constitutional expertise, particularly in the area of presidential impeachment, I am writing to ask for your comments and thoughts on Mr. Dean’s statement.

Unchecked surveillance of American citizens is troubling to both me and many of my constituents. I would appreciate your thoughts on this matter as soon as possible.

Sincerely,
Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

The Democrats are two years way from 2008. They would be incredibly stupid to impeach Bush. He can not run. But we are talking about Democrats. Stupid is their middle name.

Impeach Bush Now
by Barbra Streisand
December 19, 2005

“If there was ever a time in history to impeach a President of the United States, it would be now. In my opinion, it is two years too late … Shouldn't war be an absolute last resort? We went to war because we were misled. And we should be angry because of the 2,000 American soldiers and the 200 armed coalition forces that have died. We should be livid because of the 15,000 American soldiers that have been horribly maimed and wounded. We should be disgusted because of the 30,000 innocent Iraqi civilians that have been killed and the 20,000 that are wounded after administration officials claimed that the US was going to liberate the Iraqi people. When does it stop? It stops with the indictment and impeachment of this corrupt, power-hungry, greedy group of incompetent leaders. How many more have to die before this happens?” - Barbra Streisand

The tide is turning. With your help we can make history. On July 1, 2005 we reported that 42% of Americans favored impeachment if Bush lied about the war in Iraq. That figure has now increased to 53% according to the latest Zogby poll. 53% of the people said that they agreed with the statement: “If President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment.”

Each person in the ImpeachBush.org movement should be aware that it is the work that everyone has done in the last two years that has led to a sea change in this country. Bush’s support has declined dramatically and the call for impeachment is now in the air.

Major personalities, peace organizations, veterans groups, environmental movements, civil rights leaders and labor unionists are starting to demand impeachment. The impeachment movement is growing every day. With your help we can continue to spread the reach and influence of the movement. Click here to support the ImpeachBush.org movement.

We have to keep up the momentum. That’s why we are taking out newspaper ads, radio spots and planning for major events that will highlight the absolute need for impeachment. The newspaper ads and radio spots reach millions of people. Please help by making a donation to help in this massive advertising campaign.

More than 300,000 people marched against the war on September 24 in Washington DC. Large marches took place that day in San Francisco and Los Angeles. ImpeachBush.org played a huge role at these demonstrations. The message of impeachment was carried to millions of people. Live coverage of the demonstration on C-Span, Pacifica, Air America as well as major news stories on CNN, ABC, NBC. CBS and in most daily newspapers gave a big boost to the visibility of the impeachment movement.

Now, the ImpeachBush.org movement is announcing that it will help sponsor and promote nationally coordinated demonstrations in cities and towns in all fifty states on March 18-20, 2006, the third anniversary of the start of Bush’s criminal war of aggression in Iraq. We are already starting to organize for these locally-coordinated actions.

We urge ImpeachBush.org members and supporters to actively participate in building demonstrations in your local area. We will produce hundreds of thousands of flyers, petitions, bumper stickers, signs, banners and information/fact sheets.

We urge you to donate to help cover the huge expenses with massive street mobilizations. With the help of people all over the country the September 24 mobilizations were a huge success. Bush has the billions from Corporate America, Big Oil and the so-called Christian Right in his corner. The ImpeachBush.org movement needs to be able to count on you to help finance and fund this critical effort to hold government officials for their criminal conduct. We can’t do it without your help. Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has become the first in the Senate to raise consideration of impeachment of President George W. Bush for authorizing spying on Americans without warrants, RAW STORY has learned. In a release issued this evening, Boxer said she's asked "four presidential scholars" for their opinion on impeachment after former White Housel counsel John Dean -- made famous by his role in revealing the Watergate tapes -- asserted that President Bush had 'admitted' to an 'impeachable offense.'

Georgia Congressman John Lewis wins the prize for the lower chamber:

U.S. Rep. John Lewis said Monday in a radio interview that President Bush should be impeached if he broke the law in authorizing spying on Americans. The Democratic senator from Georgia told WAOK-AM he would sign a bill of impeachment if one was drawn up and that the House of Representatives should consider such a move.

Lewis is among several Democrats who have voiced discontent with Sunday night's television speech, where Bush asked Americans to continue to support the Iraq War. Lewis is the first major House figure to suggest impeaching Bush.

Senator Robert Byrd is on the bandwagon, too, although he has stopped just short of using the "I" word:

Americans have been stunned at the recent news of the abuses of power by an overzealous President. It has become apparent that this Administration has engaged in a consistent and unrelenting pattern of abuse against our Country's law-abiding citizens, and against our Constitution.

[...]

I continue to be shocked and astounded by the breadth with which the Administration undermines the constitutional protections afforded to the people, and the arrogance with which it rebukes the powers held by the Legislative and Judicial Branches. The President has cast off federal law, enacted by Congress, often bearing his own signature, as mere formality. He has rebuffed the rule of law, and he has trivialized and trampled upon the prohibitions against unreasonable search and seizures guaranteed to Americans by the United States Constitution.

[...]

Oversight hearings need to be conducted. Judicial action may be in order.

Of course, both are late to the game--John Kerry was talking about impeachment before the story even broke.

Used to be. Not any more. Technology has outpaced the law, and dictionary definitions.

We can now monitor a message before we even intercept it, and vice versa. It's no longer a physical limitation ~ it's an "intention".

Monitoring and intercepting as bush explained we are doing are two totally different things.

Not sure about your first premise. The stories I have read and seen on the tube say the intercepts were from calls in/out of this country to outside the country "by people with known ties to terrorists". Enemy agents or enemy combatants are subject to GC rules and the reason they are kept at Gitmo and other places is to keep them out of the country and access to courts. Almost all POW camps during WW2 in North America were in Canada for the same reason. The enemy agents must be dealt with soon and in Military Courts in my opinion.

Bush can be wrong, as you can be wrong, as everyone who hasn't looked at today's electronic communications system can be wrong.

When you are "intercepting" nearly 100% of every transmission, the use of the word "monitoring" tends to become exactly the same as "intercepting".

When you add in the time dilation factor, it's all over.

"W" will need to go back to school on this one. He was just chasing terrorists and has obviously not kept up on electronic communications capabilities.

Your definitions and ideas of the terms "intercept" and "monitor" do not match the terminology as it is used in National Security situations.

As you and many others say "Bush can be wrong", yet you fail to see that the President sees it from the inside and has the terms as they are defined by their usage, and I seriously doubt you either are, or have been, there.

Absolutely. To have nebulous info floating around in the ether is one thing, it is entirely another to have a MSM "newspaper" printing this stuff on the front page. (Note: I use the term "newspaper" loosely in this instance.)

Clinton and his Commerce Secretary, Brown, were, allegedly, using the info gleaned from spying to bribe American companies for their support. It is a very serious charge, but far more nefarious than Bush using the system to protect us.
