Officials Fret Over Disappearance Of Explosives 150 Pounds Of Explosives Missing From Sandia-Affiliated Company

POSTED: 2:10 pm MST December 19, 2005 UPDATED: 2:17 pm MST December 19, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Officials discovered hundreds of pounds of explosives stolen in Albuquerque on Sunday.

One hundred fifty pounds of c4, 250 pound deta sheet, and 2,000 blasting caps were taken from a Sandia Labs employee's company.

Officials are very concerned about these thefts.

The items were stolen from a facility in Southwest Albuquerque.

Burglars apparently cut through steel bars to get at the goods.

C4 is a plastic explosive.

A deta sheet is another explosive that looks like a rubbery sheet of orange or green paper.

What makes deta sheets especially dangerous is that they can be hidden in books or letters. It cannot be spotted by a metal detector but are used by engineers for detonation.

Blasting caps are devices used to set off explosives.

If you know anything about the disappearance, please call police.

"Dont worry the Patriot Act will expire soon. The terrorists will be protected and Nancy Pelosi will be in charge."

Good. Given that this breach occurred WITH the Patriot Act, and given that suspicious Muslims still aren't searched prior to boarding planes WITH the Patriot Act and given that our Mexican border is Swiss cheese WITH the Patriot Act...life without it won't be any worse.

http://science.howstuffworks.com/c-41.htm for the more curious.

Slipping it into a package is easy, getting it to go off, not so easy. It takes several bricks (Army issue 1/2 kilo blocks) to blow a truck.

A 150 pounds, a lot of weight, unless several folks are involded, so, not easy to carry....in the trunk of a car - could make quite the mess.

Hopefully the local heat will recover the goods quickly.

Isn't there someone on this board who know about C4? In the movies, it only takes about a fist-sized chunk to blow a hole in a safe. I believe, in experienced hands, this could make a whole crapload of backpack bombs.

I could make a quarter pound of C4 slice through a standard steel building I beam. C4 has an explosive expansion rate greater than 4000 fps. It wouldn't take much for a bus. The bomber's own body becomes shrapnel.

All the KOAT story says it was from a facility in SW ABQ. Do you know if it was in the gang-infested area of the South Valley??

Google says their office is in Four Hills. I think the storage area might be more near the airport.
