Smoking foes try to stop parents from lighting up

Anti-smoking activists who are driving cigarettes from public places across the country are now targeting private homes -- especially those with children.

Their efforts so far have contributed to regulations in three states -- Maine, Oklahoma and Vermont -- forbidding foster parents from smoking around children. Parental smoking also has become a critical point in some child-custody cases, including ones in Virginia and Maryland.

In a highly publicized Virginia case, a judge barred Caroline County resident Tamara Silvius from smoking around her children as a condition for child visitation. Mrs. Silvius, a waitress at a truck stop in Doswell, Va., calls herself "highly disappointed" with the court's ruling.

"I'm an adult. Who is anybody to tell me I can't smoke or drink?" she said in an interview yesterday.

An appeals court upheld the ruling, but not before one judge raised questions about the extent to which a court should become involved in parental rights and whether certain behavior is harmful or simply not in a child's best interest. Mrs. Silvius says she complied with the decision by altering her smoking habits.

"My children know not to come around when I'm on the front porch with my morning coffee, tending to my cows or out in my garden, because I'm having a cigarette," she said. Still, she thinks this was not a matter for the courts because it was not proven that she posed a risk to her children's health.

and I guess next fireplaces and woodstoves will be banned because of particulate matter..
Aw! But where I live they have "no burn days" where they do that if the air quality isn't up to certain standards.

"------ and contributes to a host of medical maladies in adults. That fact alone should give you and everyone else pause to consider its unhealthy aspects."

Oh my God,are you telling me that smoking is BAD for me? Who knew?

And here I got up this morning feeling great,no health problems, and just turned 73.

Thank heaven's for smart folks like you that tell us all that we are doing wrong---I'll have to pass the info along to all the other senior citizen smokers.

By the way,I assume you think "senior-citizen smoker" is an oxymoron. Shouldn't we all be dead by now?

No TRUE conservative would gamble with their child's health like that. You can pretend it's not a gamble, or the earth is flat, or that there was another shooter on the grassy knoll.

But you put your child's health at risk. We can debate the amount of risk, but don't insult your own intelligence, or lack thereof, by asserting the risk is zero.

Because of your genetic profile the wear and tear theory doesn't apply to you...and I am happy for you. But...most people are not like you and smoking does harm them.

Ever visit a Veteran's Hospital and check in the cancer ward? I have.

Here is one more source about the tobacco and cancer link, but it probably doesn't apply to you again because of your genetic profile...

I bet that you have/still do engage in far worse things, that have or shall have deleterious consequences for your child/children or those you will have in the future.

I had cancer TWICE in my life. Did you know that?

Both teams of Doctors even said that my cancers were NOT caused from my smoking!

That isn't the first, nor even a question my doctor asks me.

Are you a "doctor shopper"? Looking for lots of scrip are you, to feed your prescription drug habit? So, what are you hooked on; oxycodon or something else?

My teeth look fine; I brush and floss. Do you?

Snuff? You did SNUFF and now you're a lush? Sheeeeeeesh!

Don't you know how deadly bad drinking martinis are for you? And YOU have the temerity to tell me what I should do? You've got to be kidding!

I have less than no intention of quiting smoking cigarettes and I suggest that you mind your own business, ducky. After all, you went from a using a legal substance ( tobacco ), which doesn't alter your ability to think, walk, drive, etc. to a substance that does and you dare to tell me what to do?

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I don't make new year resolutions; I find that such a juvenile and always silly thing to do. And FWIW, since as far as I'm concerned, I have yet to find any area of agreement between us, in all the years both of us have been on FR, you are one the LAST people, on the face of the earth, whose suggestions I would follow. But I will wish you and yours a MERRY CHRISTMAS and thank you for your Christmas wishes for me.

P.S. I am NOT "grumpy"; I just don't suffer fools lightly. Perhaps that's why you find my replies to you not all that "cheery". :-)

No, I don't have nicotine stained fingers.

What kind of a smoker were you, that your fingers got stained?

You know what it is? It's because parents keep their kids in a bubble trying to "protect them from the ills of the air" and they can't build up their immune system! So, they are open to all KINDS of sickness.

You are so absolutely correct it is not even funny.

Having a 7 year old I am around a lot of children on a fairly regular basis, there are 2 types - the ones that are chronically sickly and the ones that blow off whatever it is the sickly ones pass around. To a one the chronically sickly live in homes that are practically sterile and do not run and play in the yard and are never dirty. The ones that shake off any ailment are the ones that know how to make mud pies.....if you know what I mean.

You are magnifying the risk of second hand smoke, which has been proved to be nonexistent.

How many children do you have? Take care of your own and mind your own bloody business. My child is fine...in every way.

There isn't a shred of medical evidence that links anything definitively to second hand smoke other than stinky clothes.

Second hand smoking is a major cause of global warming.
