REV. AL TO PAY 100G (FEC: Sharpton paid posh Mandarin Oriental hotel bills with campaign $$)
NY POST ^ | December 16, 2005 | STEFAN C. FRIEDMAN

Posted on 12/16/2005 4:40:53 AM PST by Liz

REV. AL SHARPTON Stayed at posh hotels.

The Rev. Al Sharpton should have stayed at the Motel Six instead of the Mandarin Oriental.......Sharpton has agreed to repay every dime of the $100,000 in public matching funds he got for his failed 2004 presidential race — plus interest.

Seven months after the FEC demanded the return of the matching funds because it found the Rev. had violated a regulation barring candidates from spending more than $50,000 on their own campaigns, Sharpton finally relented.

“Candidates must . . .agree to abide by spending limits as well as limiting spending from personal funds to $50,000,” a statement from the FEC read.“The commission made a determination that Rev. Sharpton should repay the $100,000 plus interest.”

Including that interest, Sharpton will have to dole out $101,878.27, of which he’s already paid $50,000.

Sharpton’s problems with the FEC emerged after The Post detailed the swank lifestyle he was enjoying while running in the 2004 Democratic presidential primary.

Sharpton spent thousands of dollars at hotels including the Los Angeles Four Seasons, the Mandarin Oriental in Miami and the Peninsula in Chicago........

But despite becoming the first candidate since 1976 to give back all matching funds to the FEC, Sharpton considers the agreement a “victory.”

“They found no impropriety,” Sharpton told The Post yesterday. “There were no fines. There was no violation.”

Sharpton stood by his earlier declaration that he thought the $50,000 cap applied only after he received matching funds, but added that it “would have cost me [another] $100,000 to fight it.”

“Now, when anyone asks whether I should have had my fund-raisers at certain hotels, it’s immaterial . . .Whatever was spent in the campaign was by me and my supporters.”

"Whatever was spent in the campaign was by me and my supporters."

Al's command of the English language and use of grammar is spectacular.

Where is Ronnie Earle, the white-knight of campaign finance laws, when you really need him? Oh, that's right....Al is a Democrat. He gets a "get out of jail free" pass, just as Pelosi, Hillary, Dorgan, etc. did.

I have never seen Al present a gospel of ANY sort...conventional or heretical. I think he got his "Reverend" title out of a cereal box just like Barry Lin.

The one on the right was, too.

I doubt that one would hear even that much from Rev Al...and haven't heard a peep of gospel from Rev Jessee either.

Al is a long time scam artist well known to those in New York. He's been walking away from debts he's piled up for years. Curtis Sliwa once did a expose on Al once and it was unbelievable what he's gotten away with over the years.
I doubt he'll pay this back. Saying it and doing it are two different things.

Anyone from the City who can add to the legend of Al?

As Rush's parody of the "Reverend" Al goes: "As soon as I get my matchin' funds, I'm out the door..."

How does a simple man-of-the-cloth come up with 100 large. Second collection at the Church of What's Happenin' Now, I guess.

That should read "Rev. Al Supposed to Pay..."

Whether he does or not remains to be seen.
