Poll: Clinton v. Giuliani in 2008

(CNN) -- If the results of a recent poll pan out, voters will see two big names from the Big Apple on the ballot in November 2008.

Those names are Sen. Hillary Clinton, a Democrat, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a Republican.

The CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll released Thursday indicated Clinton and Giuliani were the early favorites to win their respective party's nomination.

But those polled said they believe the former first lady would have a smoother path to the nomination than her GOP counterpart.

Conducted December 9-11, the telephone poll asked 393 registered voters who described themselves as Republicans and 446 registered voters who described themselves as Democrats who they were most likely to support in their respective primaries.

The headline might say Rudy, but I think the real news of this poll is Allen at 7% and Bill Frist at just 3%. Allen doesn't get a huge amount of national exposure so for him to be at 7% is great. As for Frist, for a guy who is on the news that much to only be at 3% is terrible. I would imagine he'll skip on the race just to save himself the embarrassment.

What a nightmare scenario that would be.

"If the results of a recent poll pan out, voters will see two big names from the Big Apple on the ballot in November 2008."

Correction: Rudy is actually from the Big Apple. Hillary isn't even from New York State.

George Allen hasn't impressed me since Barbara Bozo Boxer beat him in a debate on CNN's late edition about 3 months back. I couldn't believe how flacid he was. She just lied, distorted, double-talked and deceived and Allen said NOTHING to contradict her. He just read off some script and never once challenged her on her prevarications. It was disgraceful. I was all but yelling at the TV. I would have left her an emotional wreck sucking her thumb in the fetal position. Anyone could have rebutted her garbage but Allen was playing the typical "go along, get along" game all too many of our Republican Senators play in letting these Dems. get away with the most rancid lies all under the guise of Senate cordiality. Spare me.

Or worse, Allen is too much of a dullard to have dealt effectively with her lies. Either way, I'm not impressed. We need a superstar to take on a superstar like Hillary, not a scripted dim bulb like Allen seems to be. We should learn from the Democrats' mistake in 04 that running a no name bore from the Senate gets you exactly nowhere. Plus he looks just a little too much like Howdy Doody to impress anyone as being presidential timber.

Nope, I'm supporting either Guiliani or Rice. We need a big name to beat a big name like Hillary. A senator who could even beat a dim bulb like Boxer just won't do. Hillary will eat Allen alive in the debates.

And don't underestimate Hillary. She only has to take one sizeable Bush state away from the Republicans like Ohio and she's in, and that's imminently doable with the sorry state the Ohio GOP is in. If the political fortunes of Republicans don't turn around well before 08, Hillary could take the White House. We can't take anything for granted. People may be ready for a change, even one for the worse, come 08. I'm not willing to risk that with a marginal candidate, at best, like Allen. None of the rest of us should be either. There's just too much at stake.

Hillary will still have trouble if the war is going on in '08. She also has to come out against the war now or else she risks "Green Flight", something that crippled Al Gore in 2000.

when you find this superstar, well known, conservative, non-dullard candidate for the republican nomination for 2008 - let us all know will you.

I would not vote

Mark Sanford should run.

But those polled said they believe the former first lady would have a smoother path to the nomination than her GOP counterpart
We can all agree the media will give any R a harder time than Hillary

Both are too flawed to stand the glare of a national election.

Why do they assume the Hildebeast will still get the nomination? She is all over the map these days and her party base can't stand her.

You are right on.

Allen has been weak every time I have seen him.

Rudy is a powerhouse speaker and a political brawler, both will be necessary to win in 2008.

Guliani for me, too.

I just can't see George Allen, with his milquetoast delivery and personality, inspiring anybody.

Rudy, OTOH, will be on fire!

It'll take a SUPERSTAR to beat Hillary.

Anyone who denies that, is living in another universe.

How much do you know about Rudy?

Enough to know that I would support him over anybody whose name is being floated as a possibility.

Oh, I know, he's got some liberal positions.

Well, guns are off the table! Nobody's going to be messing with anybody's guns.

As for abortion, I expect Rudy will mellow on that issue; he knows he'll have to to get the nomination.

Guiliani cleaned up New York, reduced crime, and got the fiscal house in order. He's an optimistic, creative, enthusiastic human being. It's hard not to like him or want to follow his leadership.

Who've you got in mind?

For the record, he didn't "clean up" New York. How NYC got "cleaned up" is a complicated story.

On the other hand -- here are some of the facts that will get floated during the Primaries:

He's twice divorced. The first time to a cousin and the second time to a newscaster. The cousin will, naturally, keep quiet. The newscaster knows where the bodies are buried.

His father did hard time "Upstate" for armed robbery.

During his divorce, when he vacated the G. Mansion, he lived with two gay men.

None of this stuff registers with NYC voters, but a lot of people might be offended by it. And, too, there are plenty of other skeletons rattling around in the closest.
