Bush Accepts McCain's Ban on Torture

White House Agrees to McCain Torture Ban Move Comes After House and Senate Back Language By LIZ SIDOTI, AP

WASHINGTON (Dec. 15) - After months of resistance, the White House has agreed to accept Sen. John McCain's call for a law specifically banning cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of foreign suspects in the war on terror, several congressional officials said Thursday.

The congressional officials spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they did not want to pre-empt an expected announcement later in the day at the White House, possibly by President Bush and McCain.

These officials also cautioned the agreement was encountering opposition in the House from Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee.

Wednesday, in a symbolic move, the House endorsed the Senate-passed ban. Approved 308-122, the procedural vote in the House puts political pressure on negotiators - but does not require them - to include the ban and another provision standardizing interrogation techniques used by U.S. troops in a final wartime military spending bill.

Once a hero, now a disloyal, media-whore, RINO scumbag.

As to your comment to WhistlingPastTheGraveyard, "You are nothing."

That doesn't even merit a response, idiot. (O.K., I couldn't help it)

"If you want to beat Hitlary, nominate Mcain!"

Duuuuuuuude... if you want to weaken the United States, and hand over every ideal that rational conservatives have fought for for the past hundred years... then nominate McCain.

If you want to preserve the Constitution... then flush McCain down the crapper, which is where he belongs.

Nothing will change....we will simply turn them over to the Iraqi's and they will take care of business..just as we did in Vietnam...turned them over to the South Vietnamese. That being said McCain and Hagel are both a$$holes for bringing the subject up for the world to review. There is plenty of rules on the books about torture. What McCain ought to address is the other folks torturing rules...

Yeah well, I am from a military family. My Dad disliked McCain (navy guy) always said McCain did some things he should not have while a prisoner. I always cut the guy some slack- until now. You don't act like McCain and Hagel with soldiers in the field. Whatever they may have been in their youth, they are Dem loving traitors now. I will never vote for McCain. I don't care who the Dems run. He put his own ambition ahead of the nation's well being. As for Hagel, he might as well join the Dems. They may well have been heroes in their youth, but now, both are scum.

He is a bitter-Pub because he couldn't not believe he could lose to someone like 'W' and could not understand the pub-euphoria surrounding 'W' as he could not see the reason for it.

Still a PUB!

Will win.

Don't undestimate Hitlary. Klintons know how to fool people.

Conservatives should pinch their noses and Vote Mcain if they like to win.

Who else? You know anyone else who can beat Hitlary?

Rice maybe, if she clean up Iraq.

its the CIA who is holding people like Zubayda and KSM, holding them incommunicado, perhaps indefinetly. that's the real focus here, its those types of prisoners we need to have "flexibility" with regarding interrogation.

I resort to personal attacks....

You do, but you can take comfort in the fact that they're second-rate personal attacks... so you're not actually hurting anyone's feelings.

John Mccain has sealed his fate as far as being the nominee for President in the Republican Party, Hagel also has turned off so many Republicans, he will be lucky to win re-election. The MSM only has these two out front because they slam their Party at every turn. McCain is being pushed by the MSM because they know he is crazier that a june bug swimming in hard cider. They know that if he is the GOP nominee they have tens of thousands of pages of Archives outlining what a nutball McCain is that they can use to defeat him. Mccain has said plenty of outlandish sometimes very Politically incorrect things and jokes that the media would have jumped on a sane Republican for saying. They have been keeping all that data handy while pushing him to be the nominee so they can destroy him with new headlines everyday just to keep Pubbies out of the White House. Just the fact that Mccain kept his wife out of Jail for forging Prescriptions of fellow employees and needy people in a Charitable Organization is enough to cause a huge stink.

I have said many times on FR (and been flamed for it) - in the "battle of the RINOs" for the US presidency, I'd take Rudy over McCain hands down.

but on this issue - George Allen voted for this too. there is no one to the right of McCain on this issue that he fears.

Perhaps you can explain why the US has entered into treaty obligations that define torture exactly the same way this bill defines it - if you think that is the issue.

Or perhaps you can't.

FYI...Hagel was a squad leader not a pilot.. .....from his Bio on his website: Hagel served in Vietnam with his brother Tom in 1968. They served side by side as infantry squad leaders with the U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry Division. Hagel earned many military decorations and honors, including two Purple Hearts.

Probably be a good idea to get your facts straight. Also from many reports McCain was a dog $hit stick and that may have contributed to his lodging arrangements for a few years in the Hilton.

Rudy is so far out on 'Life' issue that it would certainly split the party.

Although I agree, he would be kick-ass candidate. Maybe if he changes his position but then he opens himself up to be attacked as a hypocrite.

Macain at least calls himself pro-life.

If only he would not be such a hot-head and hang out with Robertson/Dobson a little bit more, we could get a HERO-PRESIDENT and keep Hitlary out.

You are right Mccain did not follow the rules of training and this may have contributed to the Crash. He also crashed in the OCean on another instance, and because he did not follow his training(did things his way) he cut himself out of the submerged aircraft instead of using the protocol for removal. Mccains Father and Grandfather were both high ranking Navy men,and he never lived up to their examples. He is a pathetic, facsimile of a Military person. Somehow I think that maybe in all those crashes and the time in the Hanoi Hilton have turned him so looney.
