Before all you anti-MS fanboys attack my setup let me first say I am an ASP/VB web developer for an online company and require IE and MS so save the firefox/mac posts for another day.
On to the problem at hand...
I got the automatic update last night on my XP pro system and now my IE acts very odd. It seems to open fine but it always opens a new window no matter how I try (ie. type in an addres, using favorites).
The original window stays open but it doesnt allow any interaction with it. If I try to do something in it, it opens yet another window. The new windows act normally. Its just very odd any rather annoying.
Anyone having issues with this auto update comulative patch?
Thanks
Have you tried Firefox? I love it!
Sorry, couldn't resist.
hardy har har. ;)
First, don't allow auto-updates. At a minimum, make it give you to option to update or not.
Second, use the system restore to the last pre-update restore point. If the problem goes away, check to see how essential the XP update is.
[I always cringe at updates and upgrades for any software. It seems they create as many, or more, problems than they solve. I always hate those that remove or change a function that I specifically use.]

Odd. Mines fine. Try Folder Options:General:Browse Folders and select open in its own window. I can't think of the problem except maybe the java you're using might have an issue. I am using MS java.
LOL...turned off system restore because my awesome computer has a whole 8 gb of space (2 4gb drives).
Well this certainly sucks unmentionables.
I have auto update as well and mine is so far so good.
Mine is working fine, though I use FireFox almost all the time. Certain sites don't work with FF. But I tried IE on FR, and it is working just fine. You might want to check in Internet Options. Sounds like some have been changed......
You might look in Add/Remove Programs, make sure the "show updates" box is checked. Then uninstall the update.
Ok let me get this straight, if you do a Response.Redirect or submit a form, it will open the target in a new window?
FR isn't the place I'd go for MSIE troubleshooting.
I'm sure there are lots of boards dedicated to it, such as:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser
> I got the automatic update last night ...
Reminds me of Dilbert on the 7th:
http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/dilbert-20051207.html
when he asks the PHB in the last panel:
"Does anything ever sound like a bad idea to you?"
The only thing surprising about the current discussion
is that it took this long for the first auto-update
auto-defect-install to get reported on FR.
I have all my stuff configured for user-initiated
update. I'd rather let someone else go first.
Many software publishers offer auto-update, not just MS,
but MS will take the heat for the foul-ups, because the
OS can affect all the apps, whereas an app update disaster
(such as ZoneAlarm apparently had recently) [usually]
just affects that app.
No this is more of an user type issue. The IE application itself opens up a window...i want to use it (say to test something) and when I type in a URL or use the favorites, it opens a new window instead leaving the original window in the background.
Found out something new... If I Ctrl+n, the new window opens but hangs for a good 3-5 minutes. if I click on any links in this new window, it opens up a new window and behanve exactly like the original window that I explained above.
Mine also did the update last night, and mine's not doing this. Somewhere there's a setting to open links in a new, or the same, window.
bump
If you need the IE engine, why not try Maxthon. It uses the IE engine but provides tabbed windows so all your windows are fixed until you close them.
Have you done something as simple as reboot?
Mine had restarted automatically this morning... maybe yours didn't, and needs a full restart.
Check the settings under Tools -> Internet Options. Open the Advanced tab. In my settings there is an option titled "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts", make sure that is checked. I'm not sure if this will correct your problem, but you never know, do a look down through the other options you might find one that corrects it.
It's actually a pretty good place to get advice, if you can weed through all the posts that just take potshots at MS or the poster ;~D
