United Nations Faces New Challenges

WASHINGTON — Sixty years after it was founded to bring nations together and prevent another world war, the United Nations finds itself in a time of crisis, with some critics saying they want drastic reforms immediately or dissolution of the world body altogether.

"We decided to take on the United Nations. It’s been a problem for a long time," said David Bossie, president of Citizens United, a Washington, D.C.-based conservative grassroots group that has produced a documentary film criticizing the world body.

"Their record is one of failure," he said.

Some of the problems often cited about the United Nations include the Oil-for-Food scandal, the largest bribery scheme in history and one that originated within its corridors. The program that allowed Iraq to trade oil for humanitarian relief but ended up allegedly lining the pockets of U.N. executives and influencing votes in the Security Council is currently under investigation.

In August, the former chief of the Iraqi Oil-for-Food program, Benon Sevan, resigned from the world body just hours before the results of a U.N.-sanctioned probe by former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker accused Sevan of getting kickbacks from the $67 billion operation. Several other U.N. officials have been connected to the scheme as have representatives of some member-nations.

No, no, no

The UN is a force for good, Islam is a religion of peace, democrats are loyal Americans, and the media isn't a left wing mouthpiece. So I'm told anyway.

House Majority Whip Rep. Tom Delay sponsored a bill to prohibit the wearing of a U.N. uniform by U.S. service personnel. This bill was a reaction to the case of U.S. Army soldier Michael New, who had refused to wear a U.N. uniform and was court-martialed and discharged for bad conduct by Clinton.

Such a bill was considered unnecessary under President Bush because he – and the Republican Party – had made it absolutely clear that he would never order U.S. troops to serve under U.N. command. "I will never place U.S. troops under UN command," candidate Bush said in his speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, Simi Valley, California, November 19, 1999. The 2000 Republican Party Platform declared that "…American troops must never serve under United Nations command."

"Such a bill was considered unnecessary under President Bush", yet he has no problems with a Joint, International and Multinational military command? The more I learn about this sob the more he pisses me off! him and his damn globalism is going to ruin the US!

I suppose it is drawing a thin line, no? He said the same thing to Effin during the debates. Something to the effect of 'Senator, do you propose placing US troops under the control of the UN/other country...' (My wording is not correct, but the point is there)

US out of the UN altogether. Why not focus more on NATO, isn't it more effective?
