With the scheduled execution of Stanley Tookie Williams approaching and no word from the governor on Williams' clemency request, prominent death penalty opponents gathered in San Francisco on Sunday to make final appeals for the gang co-founder's life.
Assemblyman Mark Leno, D-San Francisco, and Sister Helen Prejean, whose work against the death penalty inspired her book and a movie, both called "Dead Man Walking," spoke during an American Civil Liberties Union event at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. They said that executing Williams would destroy one of California's most effective advocates for keeping children out of gangs.

He can still serve as an object lesson of WHY to stay out of gangs.

The murderer-loving crowd is giving the full-court press treatment. Typical.

I'm against the death penalty, but this is not the life I'd take my stand on.

Arnold's silence is deafening. Why doesn't he just come out and announce, one way or the other?

Arnold's silence is deafening. Why should he stir up the clowns now? They'll have plenty of time to riot after Tookie is answering his maker. Besides, afterwards takes a lot of wind out of their sails.

I wonder if the timing (this being so close to Christmas n'dat) will impact Arnold's decision.
I'm thinking of a death penalty trial held in Pittsburgh PA a decade ago. The jury found the perp guilty of multiple murders, then came the penalty phase of the trial, which was held on Good Friday. The perp's lawyer pleaded with the jury: "Please don't crucify my client like Pontius Pilate crucified Jesus Christ."
Because it was Good Friday, so close to Easter, the jury just couldn't bring themselves to approve the death sentence. They gave him life in prison instead.
