Rumor of levee dynamite persists
The Times-Picayune ^ | Monday, December 12, 2005 | Tara Young

On this much, there is general agreement: The destruction of the Lower 9th Ward started with a series of earthshaking explosions.

Preliminary evidence shows shoddy engineering, poor maintenance and politics led to the massive failure of the levee system that was supposed to keep New Orleans dry.

But long before the evidence was pulled together, another theory had taken root, and it probably won't go away any time soon: that the explosions were caused by dynamite set by someone deliberately blowing up the levees.

People believed stuff like this about the flooding during Hurricane Betsy...some people want to be victimized, so they have something besides the weather and their own political leaders to blame.

African-Americans have been given plenty of reason to distrust white authority

In NOLA the authorities ARE African Americans and Democrats.

These people are stuck on stupid.

There is not a shred of evidece of this at all, yet some people in the MSM are actually giving this credence.

It's true, the levees were blown up. It's also true that: pigs fly, Bill Clinton was the most ethical president in US history, Joe Biden never had hair plugs, Howard Dean is sane and I'm having lunch with Elvis today at Area 51. (Massive sarcasm alert)

African-Americans have been given plenty of reason to distrust white authority, she said.

--African Americans need to take responsibility for their own actions and quit blaming whites for their ignorance.

LOL...the moonbats went crazy over this one...

What did those levees in was a CAT 5 STORM SURGE. Oh, I know N.O. was grazed by a cat 3 hurricane. However, the momentum of the wave action continued as a CAT 5. Now we read the part of the levee system which failed was not up the proper specs. I read a barge also hit the weakened levee. So we've got Cat 5 storm surge, crappy construction, and a barge running wild. No bombs or bomb residue. The moonbats will just say there's a coverup.

In many ways, I wish there had been a levee bomber. It would rekindle my hope that maybe at least one person in New Orleans performed their job competently on the day Katrina made landfall.

The rumors persist because the government did bomb the levees during the 1927 flood.

I read about it in the book Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America by John M. Barry details the history of the levee system from the beginning before the Civil War and details the flood of 1927. It's a fascinating read.
