Jeanine Pirro is expected to quit her bid to unseat Sen. Hillary Clinton as early as tomorrow, prematurely ending what had been billed as one of the nation's marquee races. Just a few months ago, the smart, aggressive and charming Westchester district attorney was the darling of a Republican Party convinced she was the right candidate who - even if she couldn't beat Clinton - could at least slice into her high approval ratings.
But now, Pirro, 54, is being written off as the first political roadkill of the 2006 election season. And Clinton never even had to throw a punch.
What happened?
"She's been hurt by a lack of money and a campaign that from the beginning has been sputtering at best," said Marist College pollster Lee Miringoff.
Pirro, he said, also fell into the trap of making a central issue of her campaign that Clinton harbors presidential ambitions and won't finish a second term, a claim that, even if true, doesn't seem to matter much to most New Yorkers.
GOP insiders said they expect her to toss in the towel tomorrow when Republican leaders meet in Albany to gear up for next year's elections, which also feature races for governor, state attorney general, Congress and all 212 state lawmakers.
Officially, her campaign says Pirro has no plans to quit, but sources said she will be "drafted" to run for attorney general, a job for which many of her backers say she is well qualified given her background as a prosecutor and former judge.

Do you think that Colin Powell may be interested in running against Hitlery?
its hard for a governor to win a 4th term - and Spitzer is unbeatable anyway.
the race against Hillary would have totally different dynamics for Pataki - Pataki does not have high personal negatives.
Patki has lousy internals and even GOPers don't like him. He also has the charisma of a box of rocks. Do you remember him at the last GOP Presidential Convention ? Tepid would be a compliment, for the reaction he got after his speech.
Powell would, of course, be branded a RINO by the crowd on this thread.
that aside, I do not think Powell wants to be a senator.
which GOPers don't like him? the national GOPers? who cares about them, they don't vote here.
The last person to run as a conservative and win a statwide election in NY was al D'Amato in 1992. Dennis Vacco did it in 1994 but on some strong national coat tails. Vacco was run out of town 4 years later, though.
A strong conservative alienates most NYers. That's just the truth.
for all this "RINO" talk - all I know is that the Pataki/Rudy/Bloomberg years were 100 times more liveable in NY/NYC then the Cuomo/Dinkins era.
It doesn't stand for NOT CONSERVATIVE TO THE NTH DEGREE ! It means "REPUBLICAN IN NAME ONLY"; which does NOT mean that all GOPers have to be Conservative enough for the MORE CONSERVATIVE THAN THOUERS here.
I hate to say this but NOBODY will beat Hillary, except for Rudy, and even that is questionable. Hillary is way too popular in NY state.
Yeah, just how eeeeeeeeeeevil unapologetic pro-life, pro-family, anti-tax conservativse like Rick Santorum and Peter Fitzgerald were "unelectable" in their "moderate" states. ::rolls eyes::
Ever notice the RATs never play this game of infesting their party with turncoats?
Try to picture some RAT telling his fellow party members: "Bush won North Dakota by over 60% of the vote here!! A purist liberal will NEVER win here! Kent Conrad is UNELECTABLE. Byron Dorgan is UNELECTABLE. We HAVE to run a Bush-loving, pro-gun, anti-abortion Democrat or we're dooooooooomed!!"
You had NO "case", sweetums. You have delusions.
Pataki should have sat down after his two terms and run for Senator against Hilly in 2000. I was surprised he ran for a third term and actually won. He overstayed his welcome and could have played his cards much better.
Screaming insults and engaging in flights of fancy will not prove your point of view. Thanks to one of your RINO patron saints of the last 40 years, John Vliet Lindsay, he helped to make me a Tennessean... and another million NYC citizens residents of other states. You'd best remember that.
I didn't "scream", you are a fool, and I know excrement when I see it. You? You eat it and then tell everyone that it's delicious.
We saw 'em. Remember? I said "Clam sauce. Ick!"
Headline: Pirro's Campaign Goes Pyric!
No kidding.
That's true. Pro lifers can't seem to cope with the fact that their big issue is a bona fide loser in a state like NY. For me, it's very clear that abortion isn't going away in our lifetimes. Anybody who is hanging on to that idea needs to do some soul searching.
Yeah, it's all the "Attack dogs" fault. It definitely had nothing to do with Pirro being an incompetant twit who couldn't find page 10 in her announement speech and refused to "go negative" on Hillary. Candiates who look incompentant and shuffle through their notes on their very first campaign day are ELECTABLE and "beat Hillary"!
Oh yes...it'll be a repeat and in spades. And the shrillest of the shrill, will be people posting from Tenn. and such states, who have never set foot in N.Y, or N.J. !
