DURHAM, N.C. -- At shopping malls across the region, Santa Clauses are greeting lines of children and listening to their Christmas wishes.
But some parents don't like the homogeneity of the men behind the white beard and red suit, and one group of mothers is bringing diversity to the North Pole.
"We would like to see Santas of all ethnicities that represent all children," said Tammy Cruell, of Mocha Moms, a group of African-American stay-at-home mothers.
Mocha Moms plans a Dec. 10 party at the Hayti Heritage Center, in Durham, that will feature the only African-American Santa in the region this year.
One of two Santas working at Crabtree Valley Mall is bilingual, but the Santas at other Triangle malls are white, speak only English and don’t know sign language, officials with the various malls said.
Afraid of meeting up with a Santa just like that, Tina Ndoh has avoided taking her two children to see Santa for years.
"It wasn't high on our priority list because I knew they wouldn't see a Santa that looks like them," Ndoh said.

These Moms have too much time on their hands and should get a real job.
I'm hispanic although i don't look it, i don't call myself anything eles besides what i am, well besides being 100% American of course. I'm American first, hispanic second.

When my 5 year old asked about Santa, I gave him the historical background and asked him what he thought, "do you think a man in a red suit climbs in peoples chimneys to bring gifts or is it your mother and me?"
That's not a Santa, that's one of his elves.
I am no comfortable with minority kids repeatedly seeing the white man in a "Santa Claus" role.
His daughter asked him what color Santa was. He responded "Well, when Santa goes down the chimney he becomes the color of the child living in that house. If its an Asian child he becomes Asian, if its a black child he becomes black and if its a white child he becomes white."
"Oh" his daughter responds, "what color is he at the North Pole?"

Nobody wants to see an ethnic Santa because Santa is a white man. That's just damn the way it is! Get over it.
I think it says more about the bigotry of the Mocha Moms, that they can't accept gifts from a white Santa.
Sounds like a pretty exclusive group. White women, asian men need not apply.

If other cultures have adapted "Santa Claus" it doesn't change the fact that like Malcom X and MLK were black, St. Nicholas was white, and that's where Santa Claus came from. An Eastern European legend started in the Baltics and passed through Germany.
If other cultures want their own "Father Christmas" Uncle Rhemus or Willie Wetshoe, they're NOT Santa Claus and can be purple with green polka-dots. Things are what they are.
Ya, we need to see more Muslim and Jewish Santa's.
