There has been a large explosion followed by two smaller blasts in the St Albans area, around 25 miles north of London.

Sky Correspondent Sky Meade has said he can see flames about 200ft in the sky and there appears to be burning fuel.

Speaking by telephone from his home, Meade described "burning tongues" of flames in the sky.

The first blast happened at 6.03am - the other explosions followed about 20 minutes later.

Meade, a seasoned war reporter said he can see what looks like "burning aviation fuel".

"This fire is extremely intense. It is a bright orange glow on the horizon," he said.

Witnesses have told Sky News they heard the blast near Junction 8 of the M1. It is thought to be centred around Bunsfield fuel depot, near Hemel Hempstead.

The blast was felt at Sky Centre - more than 20 miles away in west London.

It was so powerful it blew out the windows at a hotel in Hemel Hempstead. There are reports of injuries there.

And one witness has told how the explosion shook his mother's house and lifted the roof.

Witnesses have told Sky News that emergency services are converging on the area.

Sky News producer Anwar Tambe heard the blast from his home in Luton and is currently stuck in traffic on the M1.

He said blasts are "going off regularly" and debris has blown onto the motorway.

Possible, but that thing is also only 10 miles from Luton airport and I think it's fairly close to Heathrow as well. Air traffic shouldn't be unusual there, unless the plane was very low. Or it could've been the first part of the explosion itself.

It is only a matter of time before some official has a press conference and informs us that "Islam is a religion of peace."

One of the eyewitness reports said, "I was woken up just after 6am with the French doors that lead to the outside of my bedroom rattling so much that I thought someone was trying to get in."

Being French, the doors were probably shaking with terror and were trying to surrender...

Conditions dictate.....temperature inversion, humidity, terrain, number of and design of structures, vegetation etc etc ....also a good demolitions troop or EOD Tech can set off a M112 block that you can stand next to if the shot is properly tamped and "suppressed".......

I once blew up a BLU61/B using a entire M112 block (1.25 pounds of C) in a residential schoolyard ball park (second base) during a uxo amnesty day that was a visual experience only..... A 3 ft hole w/ buffers made from sandbags and scrap plywood stacked an additional 3 feet high on the surface with containment rings and encapsulated foam in a tarp tent over the entire set up kept the shot contained and we didn't even get a barking dog or a cracked window in the homes bordering the school grounds. Dirt & sandbags blew up about six feet but never came out of the foamed tarp, we screened all the dirt for frag, tamped down the hole as we found it , replaced second base and all the youngsters could find when they let em back out of the school grounds was warm dirt.....

Professionalism......all about pride and professionalism in ones work.....:o)

Repeating "it's an accident" every other sentence almost is like they are trying to brainwash everyone.

EXACTLY what they are doing...can't have the sheeple getting riled up against our Muslim neighbors. Not yet.

"I've got the TV and a live stream going; did the announcer say the explosion could be heard 15 or 50 miles away?

"The number 40 was given earlier."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This report states it was heard at least a 100 miles away.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4518426.stm#
His next priority is to get to grips with the remarkable escape he had from an explosion so catastrophic it was heard more than 100 miles away.
