Passengers tackle man charging cockpit on Honolulu flight

A suspect is in federal custody after passengers say he threatened an infant and tried to charge the cockpit of an airplane en route to Honolulu. No air marshal was aboard, but seven passengers tackled and subdued him.

Passengers say the man's strange behavior started just a couple hours after Northwest Flight 91 took off from Los Angeles.

"He came up to first class several times, and at one point he really startled me... He came up to my left shoulder, and he got right in my face and he said something in Spanish -- he said something about medicine, like 'I need medicine,'" said passenger Linda Deckard from California.

She says the man even gestured threats toward a baby with a cell phone cord, and couldn't sit still. But thanks to one father's planning, a group of passengers are heroes to nearly 200 people on the flight.

"We got the word around first class that if he makes a move for the cockpit door, he's going down," said passenger Mike Deckard. "And that's just what happened. He made a move for the cockpit door and we were on top of him."

He and six others bound the suspect's hands and feet with a belt and cords from an on-board restraint pack.

"I think he's a hero," says Michael Deckard, age 13, about his dad. "I think he did a good job. Obviously he's watching a little bit of football with that tackle. Go dad!"

"If anybody's wants to try something, remember - there are 200 other people on the aircraft who are gonna stop you," Mike Deckard said.

The suspect is a 37-year-old Mexican national. He bit one man who helped tackle him -- a Honolulu Marathon runner who had to get a tetanus shot when they landed.

Passengers were questioned for a couple of hours after landing. The suspect is being held at the federal detention center.

Where are the air marshals when you need them? This SOB should have been shot like that other nutjob, Alpizar.

OK, you and your brother will be excellent witnesses!! The guy on the plane in Florida had to be your cousin. Y'all look so much alike.

"an on-board restraint pack."

What is this, "B&D Airways" or something?

"Do you travel by air much? Just asking. Tweakers seem to be rare on the flights that I am on. They are common on the ground."

...

I'm not trying to be rude but you don't seem to be paying attention to your surroundings, people. Rampant drug abuse is spread across every financial, occupational, age groups in America now. Drug abuse IS epidemic "now".

The two in your photo are proof extraterrestials have been to earth, impregnated some of our women.

They look like Star Wars character Jar Jar Binks
offspring.

Just say no to inbreeding.

Are the passengers' determination enough ?

Oh yeah.

September 11 upped the ante, so to speak. Waiting for hostage negotiations is on longer an option.

Either the flight crew retains control of the plane or you are dead, if not by the actions of the hijackers, then by the necessity to shoot the plane down in some relatively unpopulated place to prevent another 9/11.

Once that sinks in, there is no other option.

You are dead already. If you want to have a chance to live, win at any cost.

The use of the term "national" has been customary for quite some time.

Air marshals or not, people aren't going to sit and let 9/11 happen again.

Even if the flight crew is incapacitated/killed and hijackers have taken over the plane, I think one last chance should be allowed for the lives of the passengers. A formation of F-16s could be flying around the plane and the hijackers told that they have exactly so much time to cooperate and fly *exactly* according to instruction until its safely landed at a designated location. One wrong turn/change in airspeed/altitude etc would result in the destruction of the airplane.
But I suppose today's Islamic maggots would be content to give their lives just for the deaths of a few dozen civilians and the airplane itself.

Nice idea, but I doubt it. First, there is virtually no major airport capable of landing a jetliner which is not near enough to a city to divert the plane or over/undershoot the runway before the plane is either shot down, or in such a position that shooting it down would only result in killing massive numbers of civillians on the ground, anyway.

To attempt to divert the plane to a military facility only gives the hijackers the opportunity to do the same sort of thing to a military facility.

I am afraid that only if the passengers managed to take control of the plane, have their identity verified, and land it successfully, would you have a chance of survival.

Best to never let anyone else get control, whatever that takes. If they eventually try using a planeload of dead people as a bomb, at least you tried and won't be around for the final act, when the fighters get gun/missile lock.

Why not just say Mexican?

I've noticed the word "community" also is often tacked on to categories of people even though unnecessary.
