BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- The population of Louisiana's capital city has ballooned since Hurricane Katrina, its schools and neighborhoods now home to thousands of displaced New Orleans residents.
A commission appointed by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was set to visit Baton Rouge Thursday night and listen to the displaced residents' concerns as the panel's members come up with recommendations on how to fix the ravaged city and lure refugees home.
The meeting was one of five across the South that the Bring New Orleans Back Commission planned with evacuees before issuing a recommendation to Nagin by the end of the year. Commission member Anthony Patton said the mayor then will advise Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who will ask Congress and President Bush for funding and legislation to implement the recommendations.
In previous town hall meetings with evacuees, in Atlanta and Memphis, Nagin said he was working to improve their hometown with stronger levees, better economic opportunities, restoration of utilities and an improved education system. Nagin encouraged residents to begin rebuilding New Orleans by repairing their properties and voicing their concerns to legislators.
The commission has sought reactions from evacuees to a plan by the Urban Land Institute calling for redevelopment efforts to be concentrated on sections of the city occupying the highest ground.

Does this mean that Hizzoner does not plan to attend his Town Hall Meetings after the boisterous, unfriendly welcome he has received recently? Hmmmmmmm.

----I still think the city would do much better if Nagin and Blanco were out of the picture.
Probably so, WDL. Do you know of any great activity to remove them? And, who would step into their places if they were removed? In Louisiana and New Orleans there does seem to be a leadership deficit. Let's be careful what we wish for so that it does not become a case of "out of the frying pan and into the fire". LOL

----No. I don't know other than re election and I guess what I mean is nobody could do a worse job than those two so anyone new would be a step up and at least give the people a fighting chance at a better city.
Well, WDL, try to look at it this way: At least with Nagin and Blanco, the spotlight of the world is on them ... everyone knows what they are ... and how poorly they have administered the things for which they are responsible. Every word they say and every step they take is going to be scrutinized, analyzed, reported, discussed, digested and regurgitated. Someone new stepping in [especially right now] would have a grace period during which they might not receive the same scrutiny.
At least for now, Louisiana and New Orleans need very much to be under a microscope.
I agree completely with that.I can't wait to vote for anyone, republican that is, than them two. They have really screwed things up for everybody.
There has been some talk recently of mounting a recall drive to remove Blanco. She still has two years left on her term, I believe. Nagin is up for reelection next year.
Nagin is desperate to get black voters back to NO in time for the nexst election!
Preferably those who don't know what a useless POS he is.
