John Paul's sainthood opposed

John Hooper in Rome Thursday December 8, 2005 The Guardian

A group of prominent Roman Catholic theologians and writers has revealed it is trying to stop the late pope John Paul II being declared a saint. In a document being circulated in Rome, they say the Vatican should take account of decisions reached by the Polish pontiff "that ought to be an obstacle to [his] beatification". Following emotional scenes at the late pope's funeral, his successor, Pope Benedict XVI, set him on a fast track to beatification - the first step towards sainthood - last June. Normally, the procedures cannot begin until five years after death.

The late pontiff's critics list a series of reasons why he should not be canonised. They include John Paul's failure to check "the devastating plague of abuse by clerics of minor".

Oh C'mon! The Pope was instrumental in bringing down the Iron Curtain.

And he did try to address the problem of pedophile Priests but the man was a Saint, not God.

My mistake :) i'm guilty of not reading the whole article. I assumed these clergy were opposed because of the rules, not because he didn't allow homosexuals in to the clergy and refusal to let the people "vote" (so to speak) on changes to the church

I thought you had to have something like 2 or 3 certifiable miracles to become a saint.

I'm no expert, being a Presbyterian, and I don't believe in the idea of sainthood as put forth by the Catholics, but I would like to point out that the Catholic church has a gazillion saints that nobody but theologians have ever even heard of. I think someone who everyone knows what he did won't hurt.

They seem mad, for the most part, because he was not "progressive" enough for them.

Well, he did kiss the koran. He did grant a vatican audience with voodooists. He did watch barebreasted pagan polynesian dancers on one of his many papal visits.

Pope Pius X, et al, would consider these acts remarkable, however, and not miracles.

It would be a miracle were three of his predecessors advanced for sainthood.

The Iron Curtain came down due to Ronald Reagan's persistence in bullying the poor soviets to death.

Why the rush to sainthood? We're going to be here for a while; why not wait and let history filter down?

I'm not Catholic; but that was my assumption too. I guess you have to be a really nice guy, and be well loved to be recommended for Sainthood, today.

"Other allegations levelled against the late pope were his refusal to change the church's teaching on sexual matters, his repression of progressive theologians"...

I wonder if this opposition was his unwillingness to compromise traditional doctrines? I converted to Catholicism expressly because of the courage he showed in refusing to waterdown the church's stand on abortion, marriage, etc.

In fact, there is always someone assigned to a petition for sainthood who is called the Devil's Advocate. That individual is tasked specifically to search out facts that would undermine the designation to sainthood. The individuals referred to in this article don't sound like the real deal.

And please, ease up on the question marks about Roman Catholic theologians. It seems a bit snarky.

Oh C'mon! The Pope was instrumental in bringing down the Iron Curtain.

And there are lots of "progressives" who will never forgive him for that.

Yeah? So he's a fun saint.
