Clearwater, FL (LifeNews.com) -- The national legal organization that helped Terri Schiavo's estranged husband win the right to euthanize her is awarding the local judge who made it possible. Circuit Judge George Greer is slated to receive an award from the Pinellas County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
At an upcoming dinner, Judge Greer, who authorized Michael Schiavo to end Terri's life over the objections of her parents and family, will receive the Gardner W. Beckett Jr. Civil Liberties Award.
Greer will be honored Thursday at the Feather Sound Country Club.
Judge Greer came under intense scrutiny in the Terri Schiavo case and was accused of colluding with Michael's attorney, assisted suicide advocate George Felos, in appointing an "impartial" doctor to assess Terri's condition whose brother had previously worked with Felos.
Terri's brother Bobby Schindler once told LifeNews.com about Greer, "With every hearing, it gets more obvious to me that this judge is working to insulate Michael Schiavo and, in the process, is causing harm to my sister and torturing my parents. God have mercy on other parents of disabled people in this jurisdiction."
Greer was also accused of violating the state code of judicial conduct.
The code says that, while a proceeding is pending in court, judges should not "make any public comment that might reasonably be expected to affect its outcome or impair its fairness or make any non-public comment that might substantially interfere with a fair trial or hearing."
Yet, Judge Greer frequently discussed the case with media outlets.
Wesley J. Smith, an attorney who closely follows medical ethics issues, said, during the legal battle over Terri's life, that Judge Greer was performing terribly in the courtroom.
"As bad as Michael has been, in many ways, the performance of Judge George W. Greer of the Sixth Judicial Circuit, the jurist who oversees Terri's case, has been even worse," he explained.
"Over the years Greer has repeatedly allowed Michael to shirk his legal mandate as guardian to file annual prospective "guardianship plans," specifying his proposal for providing for Terri's medical and social needs for the coming year," he added.
"Judge Greer's performance has been so deficient that he should be removed from the case forthwith, if not impeached," he explained.

Here's the Pinellas ACLU's description of the award they're giving Greer:
The Pinellas County Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union confers this honor upon individuals who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to basic civil liberties, principles, and values inherent in the Bill of Rights. In the footsteps of Gardner Beckett, these recipients exemplify an unflinching commitment to the defense of our constitution and it's guarantees of equal protection, due process, and simple justice. The annoying apostrophe abuse appears in the original text. Note also that they capitalize "Bill of Rights", but not "constitution". Probably an innocent oversight, but it does underline the perception that the ACLU values the BoR (well, certain parts of it, anyway) far above the rest of the Constitution.
Birds of a feather...
sick
Just greasing the slide into Hell.
Funny how the ACLU looks at "Capital" punishment... protect the guilty, murderers, rapists, terrorists, et.al. Make heroes outta cop killers like "Tookie" Williams... BUT KILL the innocent! The unborn, and cases like Terri Schiavo... not quick (like lethal injection) but SLOW by starvation and dehydration... or cut 'em to pieces (partial birth abortion)... they are not known as Atheistic Criminal Lovers Union for nothin'... I do the math, but it still don't ADD UP!!!!!
The ACLU really needs to change its name.
When they were handing out 'brains' this guy thought they said 'trains' and got out of the way....
This guy must be in the same neighborhood:

may the judge & the aclu both rot....
Sewer rats travel and live in packs.
This judge who believes he has the authority to also be the lawmaker and executioner is an embarrassment to America. I am still perplexed as to why he hasn't been charged with contempt of Congress. However, I also realize that the fact that the ACLU is honoring him will hopefully demonstrate to many of the "conservatives" who were saying that decisions to starve and dehydrate innocent people was somehow a "state's rights" issue.
Are we shocked that the ACLU would honor him???
I know I'm not
The state of Florida should prohibit the use of ACLU for law school clinic credit.
The ACLU uses law students ability to get class credit as a means of TAX PAYER funded cheep labor.
The ACLU must recieve ZERO tax dollars.
Shaking my head ping!
Exactly WHO is this ACLU? Is your relative, friend or neighbor a member? It seems to me to be a very small group of fanatics who live in a world of darkness! If I encountered a member I would certainly point out the error of their ways!!!!
---Amen
Somewhat small group...perhaps. Fanatics...definitely. But they exercise power far out of proportion to their numbers via the courts.
ghoulish...
