Russia has every right to sell arms to Iran, its defense minister said on Wednesday, responding to mounting criticism of a $1 billion deal announced last week.

The United States, calling Iran a "state sponsor of terror", said selling weapons to the Islamic Republic did not help the Middle East.

"This deal, this contract is absolutely legitimate. Like it or not, it's our affair. There are plenty of things we don't like either," Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said in comments shown on NTV television.

Let's sell weapons to the Chechnyans. See how Russia likes it.

they'll probably love it as it directly stimulates their economy! more arms sales only promotes the other side to seek the same playing field, which only means more sales.

in their eyes, foreign exchange and demand for the ruble is all good.

"This deal, this contract is absolutely legitimate. Like it or not, it's our affair. There are plenty of things we don't like either,"

We need to build a big, big military base in the middle of the Ukraine. It'll be our affair, and absolutely legitimate.

I would prefer

""We need to build a big, big military base in the middle of the IRAN. It'll be our affair, and absolutely legitimate.""

imo

Giving weapons to a lunatic state is stupid. Esp. when you are right on its border. They have a bunch of dead school children and yet they apparently have learned nothing about this lethal mind plague otherwise known as Islam

let's face it , the Russians are a-holes , always have been always will be....

This is the way the Russians are 'buying' their way of of the Chechen problem , to get Iran to work it on the Islamic end for them , because the Russian Army is too weak and inept to win even a single little guerrilla war by themselves.

Russia is pathetic to do this , pouring kerosene or the world at war . I hope it all comes back to bite them firmly on the okole. It will serve them right.

Yeah, they might raise a bit of a stink over that one, huh? The Chechnyans might just pull the same number and equip al-Quaida, though.

As for Russia, when you lay down with dogs, you rise with... well, bombs.

Agreed. Terribly short-sighted, like just about everything Putin does.

Sad to say that Yushenko is losing in the Ukrainian Polls. I believe that Russia is going to get rid of Yushenko in any way possible. Also, Ukraine's military leaders are resisting the change. Therefore, until Yushenko replaces his entire Police and Military structures and bans Russian and Communist influence, we can't trust Ukraine.

Some people say that Putin or hardliners in the Russian government and military allow some terrorist attacks through so they can repress their people more and try to "Bring back the glory of the USSR"

Yeah, those apartment block bombings from (I think) 2001 were never fully explained, were they?

Takes a cynical mind to do that kind of thing, but the KGB was full of cynical minds.

I feel sorry for the Russian people. They can't seem to cut a break. Constant misfortune. Makes you glad you're an American.

To ban commie influence is good thing. But to ban "russian" influence? It is same thing if you propose to ban british influence in Canada.
FYI ukranians and russians (and beloruses) are branches of one tree: Kiev Rus. All Kiev leadership speak russian better then ukranian.
