OTTAWA (CP) — Prime Minister Paul Martin will venture into violence-plagued Toronto Thursday and announce a sweeping ban on handguns, Canadian Press reports.
Martin is scheduled to visit Toronto's troubled Jane-Finch area to make a "safer communities announcement."
Liberal sources have confirmed the announcement includes a ban on handguns.

What a utter basket case Canada is becoming.
Liberal logic dictates that if only criminals have guns, criminals will be easier to find.
Because guns all have big signs attached that scream for attention when they're not being used.

Now when Canadian lefties steal the election, they won't have to fear an uprising. :)
This will likely backfire on them...it will gain them more votes in the Toronto area (which is already a Liberal stronghold) but kill them in key ridings outside the GTA...
It's a desperate attempt to control the agenda, and it will only strengthen the base, not help out in swing ridings. The 416 area code is not in play. It is the 519, 613 and 705 area codes (and, to a lesser extent, the 905 area code) that are, and this will not play well out there.
American gun makers had better be bailing out of Canada, if they have operations there. The Canadian government is going to sue the bejeebers out of them, and unlike in the US, they will win.
But they can't sue in Canada if they aren't doing business in Canada.

He is thinking he will get more votes from the left (NDP, Green, Bloc) than he will lose from the right (the reddest of the red tories who went L). He is probably right.
I doubt it. Dithers is miscalculating, afraid he is going to lose votes to the NDP in the City of Toronto (where he is polling well ahead of them), yet signs show them falling apart elsewhere...
Well, that should certainly solve the problem of law abiding citizens owning handguns!
Thank God Canada has legalized fudge packing pot smokers to complete the picture.
Why stop with guns? Why not just pass laws against ALL criminal behavior? Oh, wait...
