HOUSTON (AP) -- More than two dozen students were arrested Wednesday after a series of fights at a high school between Hurricane Katrina evacuees and local students.
One student suffered a cut under the eye. No other injuries were reported, said Houston Independent School District spokesman Terry Abbott.
Abbott said 15 students involved in the fights - which started between girls in Westbury High's cafeteria and spread to other areas - were from New Orleans. The other 12 charged were from Houston.
One student was charged with assaulting a police officer. The other 26 faced misdemeanor charges of engaging in a riot.
"We have families who are under duress from what happened with the storm," Abbott said, explaining those displaced from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina have been pushed into an unfamiliar city. "It is natural that a situation like that is going to cause some tension."
Abbott said the district has had other fights break out between students from New Orleans and Houston since more than 475,000 Louisiana residents were relocated to Texas. School officials are doing everything they can to curtail tension, he said. The school system offers counseling and student-parent forums to discuss how to improve student relations.
Nearly 2,500 students attend Westbury, including about 300 who are New Orleans transplants.
The Houston district has taken in more than 5,000 New Orleans students, more than any district outside Louisiana, he said
Too bad they don't give them all boxing gloves and helmets and make them duke it out once and for all. That was how these types of things were settled back in the days when corporal punishment was allowed.
Girls also hold a grudge forever too.
To add to deport's equations,
27 = more than 2 dozen.
now we know why nagin let the buses sit in water, he didnt want to have to go back & get any of them. lol
"Why do you assume that it was the New Orleans girls who started the fight? The article doesn't say so."
Because it's from the AP, and if the fight had been instigated by Houston residents, they WOULD have said so.
That part I got.
No doubt kids going to school today face many things we did not. For instance when my son went to school, He is 40, they had to go to the bathroom in groups to avoid hassles by certain groups who cannot be mentioned to PC restrictions.
Is this the wonderful "socialization" that government school defenders are always praising?
Yep, we here in Dallas are footing the bills. Also, can't remove them from temp housing, apartments, hotels, etc. I have a sneeky feeling we will deal with this problem for a long time and my, and other Texas taxpayer expense.
I speak for MANY here in Houston when I say that we wish this FILTH would go home.
I recall my son telling me about some fights at his HS between girls. He always said girls were much nastier than boys when it came to fighting.
For the NOLA students, rioting is a normal part of the school experience. The NOLA public school students rioted in their schools on a regular basis--complete with calling in the police.
" Seriously, with the rap / gang culture present in today's schools these kids are compelled to be territorial whether it matters or not."
They remind me of dogs urinating to mark their territory. I think that their level of civilization is on par with a dog.
Sickening what we have let happen in this great nation.
That makes no sense.
Girl gangs are nothing new. Largely made up of closet (and not so closet) dykes.
Yep. It was like this at the public school I would have attended, albeit not on as large a scale. I attended a Catholic High School, where we had cliques, but no gangs in the sense commonly understood. If you got into a fight, you would get thrown out.
"CAT FIGHT"
Pictures???????
grin

I'm not trying to pick a fight nor defend those girls. Just trying to get the facts, but the Houston girls did start the fight when they taunted the girls with gang symbols and a boy cursed New Orleans.
Gang dominated territory I believe.
