Where were all these people on the tarmac four hours ago? Stored in a warehouse eating donuts or out patrolling the streets? If the latter, shouldn't they get back to doing that instead of standing around?

Marijuana use is a known trigger. I wonder if painkilling meds your friend was given after the injury could have been a trigger. There's definitely a genetic component, but definitely environmental components too.

I'm just surprised it would be. Even the number of air marshals is classified, so I would have thought that details of what they're armed with would be too, since it would help terrorists prepare to protect themselves against the marshals.

I feel sorry for this woman and what she has gone through today. However, if it had become known later that there were Air Marshals on board this flight and THEY HADN'T DONE ANYTHING about a guy screaming down the aisle and into the concourse that he had a bomb, the press would be all over it.

Why shouldn't anybody know it? Do an FOIA and see what kind of ammo they buy. No big deal. The first time that I saw the idea of them using prefragmented rounds (like magsafe) was on the TV show "Crossing Jordan". Pretty silly, really, but they were trying to maintain the "explosive decompression" myth that hollywood has been exploiting for years.
The thing is that if you were to remove an entire window from the airplane at 30,000 feet, the air system of the aircraft would still be able to keep up with pressure loss. It's not that big of a deal. There is no reason to carry special ammunition for use on an airplane.
Some police departments carry silvertips. Some carry hydrashocks. Some carry golden sabers. Some carry semi-wadcutters. It's not that big of a deal.
I was suddenly reminded of an incident not long after 9-11 where a passenger went nutso on a flight inbound to O'Hare. He started claming the plane was going to fly into the Sears Tower.
They scrambled the fighter planes and escorted the flight in, but I'll bet were prepared to take the plane down if need be. I heard the sonic booms, lived in the area at that time.
I recall there was a nurse on board who medicated the perp with valium and benedryl after he was subdued by other passengers/crew. The valium etc. were stocked on the plane.
Mayor Richie Daley was infuriated that the father who was flying with the perp knew he was nutso and off his meds and allowed him to get on the plane.
It'd be interesteing to see if Mayor Richie would comment along those same lines regarding today's episode.

That's always a possibility, and it wouldn't be a good idea to put on a demonstration for real terrorists, showing that a diversion like this would work, and would throw authorities off the scent of a real terrorist act in progress.
I just hope the feds don't go overboard and require everyone to take a 20 page psychological test before getting on a plane. The system worked just fine this time.
