During the early morning newscast, Fox Talking Heads discussed the pros and cons of the 2005 White House Christmas card. The main criticism is in the fact that the word CHRISTMAS is not found anywhere on the card. On the other hand, the card focuses on the entire holiday season, whatever the recipient's religious leaning.
Card Face: A painting by Jamie Wyeth, son of Andrew Wyeth, depicts the White House. Snow blankets the lawn and a magnificent Pine tree, partially covering the oval office facade. Atop the building, the flag flies fullout in a stiffish breeze. The bottom third of the work features the Bush family pets: Barney, Ms. Beazley (two black Scotties), and India, the Bush black cat.
Inside the card: The 1" gold seal of the President. Beneath that a 1-1/2" statement of Psalm 28:7 (Revised Standard Version) "The Lord is my strength and my shield; in Him my heart trusts; so I am helped, and my heart exults. And with my song I give thanks to Him."
Then in large script type, the message:
WITH BEST WISHES FOR A HOLIDAY SEASON OF HOPE AND HAPPINESS 2005 With the signatures of George Bush and Laura Bush.
I recieved mine two days ago. I think it's lovely...and it was the first card of this year...I especially like that India Bush, Barney Bush and Miss Beazley Bush are depicted in the painting (and that the description of the painting on the back of the card actually calls them by their full names!).
Doesn't Ms. Beazley look so cute???
And for the record.... "holiday season" is in no way offensive to people of faith. It's when the use of that phrase seems to be an attempt to avoid any religious significance of the holiday itself.
Having Psalm 28 in there makes clear that isn't the case.
I haven't received mine yet.. I hope I didn't contribute too late as I have a collection going back to Reagan (sans Clinton).. if anyone wants to send me theirs.. ;->
Mine's on the fireplace mantle. I love the little pictures of the dogs and India!
Got my card yesterday..Not all of my cards say Merry Christmas when i picked them..The cards are always beautiful from the white house..Mine was post marked Crawford Texas, but I guess they all are..On the front of this years is also two little black Scotty dogs with another off at a distance..
I have no problem with my card. I think some people are so caught up in the word christmas they can't see past that. There is a bible verse in it for crying out loud!!! Sheesh!
Last year I got mine on Dec. 1. I didn't get one this year. Maybe because I didn't contribute to the RNC this year?
I was very surprised to get an invitation to the holiday open house at the governor's mansion in Annapolis from Gov Ehrlich. I just sent a couple of small contributions to his campaign in 2002 so I was surprised to get this invitation. Obviously it was just a form letter type thing that probably is sent to thousands of contributors but I still thought it was nice. When I showed my mom the card with Ehrlich and his family on it she assumed it must have meant I sent thousands of dollars to his campaign. ;) I wish I could afford to do that!
OOP's that is a black cat standing over by the fur tree..
Ah Jeez no this Sh*t again..
May songs of joy fill your home with warmth and your heart with happiness this holiday season.
George W Bush
Laura Bush
I haven't received my card yet. I'll just sit over on the side and pout.
I did see the card (tiny sob, online) and it does look lovely. Do people really have that much extra time on their hands that they need to critique everything?
Obviously, Bush is trying to crush the Christmas spirit by not saying "Merry Christmas" on the card!!!
I got mine about a week ago - it's a beautiful card, and Psalm 28 is one of my very favorites. I'm not offended by the reference to a happy holiday season. I know what holy day I'm celebrating.
Holiday Season to a Christian means "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!". Holiday Season to the left means "What did you get me?"
Thanks for the reminder of the 2004 card. This year's is much prettier, and I really liked the pets being in it.
