Mike Wallace says President Bush is afraid to be interviewed by him. The 87-year old reporter for 60 Minutes made the comment on MSNBCs Hardball earlier this week, in an exchange with host Chris Matthews.
MATTHEWS: So why is the man in the oval office afraid of the man on 60 Minutes? Mike, why is George W. the man in the White House afraid to interview you.
WALLACE: Because he pays attention strictly to Karl Rove and thats why from the very beginning that Karl Rove will not permit him to sit down with me.
After seeing this, I cant help but wonder why Mike Wallace is afraid of me. You see, I put in a request with Wallaces publicist several weeks ago, asking him to come on www.nranews.com and my show Cam and Company to talk about his new book and his recent appearance at a fundraiser for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence. At the time, I was told that Wallace wasnt doing any more interviews. Thats apparently not the case, so Im left to wonder why it is that Mr. Wallace wont speak with me.
On one hand, perhaps its understandable. Hes managed to appear on a number of news and interview programs to promote his new book without once having to answer a question about the slap on the wrist he recently received from CBS News for his involvement with the gun control movement. Why ruin a good thing by actually discussing one of the less impressive moments in an impressive career?
Still, its awfully hypocritical for Wallace to accuse President Bush of running scared when he himself has some questions to answer. When Wallace appeared at the fundraiser for the Brady Center on September 28th of this year, he openly mocked the past president of the NRA, Charlton Heston. He disparaged gun owners in general, saying you couldnt reason with the legions of the already convinced. He spoke of the money he gave to the Brady Center in exchange for his tickets to the fundraiser, and he ribbed his good friend Art Buchwald, who lent his name to the event (it was billed as a birthday celebration for the humorist). Why would Wallace do this? Wallace, who once said that he would watch soldiers die rather than warn them of an ambush in order to maintain his objectivity, threw away that objectivity for a cheap laugh at the expense of a man with Alzheimers and a few bucks for an organization that wants more gun control. The question I have for Mike Wallace is: was it worth it?
After I learned about Wallaces appearance at the Brady Center fundraiser, I sent an email to Vaughn Ververs, the public editor of CBSs Public Eye blog. I asked him if Wallaces appearance and comments had violated any network rules. He followed up with both Wallace and Linda Mason, the senior vice president for standards at the news organization. Wallace never expressed any remorse for his appearance, and said the whole thing was meant to be a joke. According to Mason, the network policy states if someone has become identifiable with an issue, they are no longer allowed to report on that issue for CBS. After investigating, Linda Mason said the network says if Wallace suggests a story about gun control in the future, and the network determines theres a conflict of interest, they will reject the story. As Ververs put it, I take that to mean we wont be seeing Mr. Wallace doing any more stories involving Second Amendment issues. Id like to think the network failed to see the humor in Wallaces appearance as well.
Ververs did a tremendous job in bringing this story to light, but its a shame that hes the only CBS employee willing to talk about this. Mike Wallace prides himself in asking tough questions, yet hes unwilling to face questions about his own actions. Now that Wallace is making the rounds of TV shows again, Ill be putting in another request to his publicist. Maybe this time Wallace will realize his hypocrisy. You cant demand to interview the President as a journalist while you stonewall the media as a news figure.
I don't know if this is banglist worthy or not, so I left it off.
I got news for Catcher mitt SHUT F**K UP you might get your wish beside I think you are afraid of Dubya because he probably call you on CBS bias in their news division HELLO
Beside Dubya is pretty respectable to his elders I don't want see 90 year old man cry in front of the Prez of the US
Could it be, just maybe, that W doesn't have time for an old Stalinist lefty?
What an unquenchable ego.
Mike has an overblown ego. The President isnt afraid of him he is just to insignificant to rate an interview.
Mike only impresses himself.
Maybe he's not afraid, Mike. Maybe he just doesn't think you're as important as you do.
Mike Wallace is older than CBS television itself.
Mike Wallace is going to be in a Los Angeles courtroom in 2006 to testify in the Peter Paul and Hillary case. If he tells the truth, it will sink Hillary. He has directl knowledge that Hillary negotiated the fee with producer Gary Smith, lowering it to 800K. Will he commit perjury or pretend he doesn't recall?
Bush doesn't let grade c people interview unless they are students.
Bush would really tick him off by doing an interview with his son Chris instead.
Because he's a no-good lying octagenarian pansy with a big mouth and nothing--facts or balls--to back him up? Is that why?
Dubya probably doesn't want the shoe polish on his hair to rub off on the White House furniture.
Because he is suffering from a chronic (and some say terminal) cranial-rectal inversion as well as drastic oxygen depletion.
Tell him how much you like FOX NEWS SUNDAY and could he help you out.
Might not work, but who knows, maybe you'll get an interesting reply.
Just a thought.
If you have proof of that and Mike W lies in court, that is perjury.
But producer Gary Smith already committed perjury in the Rosen trial. So did Rosen. No one did a damn thing about it. If they stick together, Rosen, Wallace, Smith, and Hillary will lie about the conversation.
Now is the time to throw down the gauntlet. Counter with a four way interview. The President & Mike Wallace followed by Hillary and O'Reilly on National TV with full live coverage on all major networks.
Wallace. You don't matter. You never did. Go away and interview more nobody's like yourself.
That is all
Har!
