LAWRENCE, Kan. A college professor whose planned course on creationism and intelligent design was canceled after he derided Christian conservatives said he was beaten by two men along a rural road early Monday.
University of Kansas religious studies professor Paul Mirecki said the men referred to the class when they beat him on the head, shoulders and back with their fists, and possibly a metal object, the Lawrence Journal-World reported.
"I didn't know them," Mirecki said of his assailants, "but I'm sure they knew me."
Messages left by the Associated Press on Mirecki's cell phone were not immediately returned.
Sheriff's Lt. Kari Wempe said Mirecki reported the attack just before 7 a.m.
The professor said he confronted the men after they were tailgating his vehicle along a road south of Lawrence. "I'm mostly shaken up, and I got some bruises and sore spots," he said.
Mirecki planned to offer a spring course called "Special Topics in Religion: Intelligent Design, Creationism and other Religious Mythologies" after the Kansas Board of Education decided to include more criticism of evolution in science standards for elementary and secondary students.
Last week, Mirecki asked the university to cancel the class after he created a furor by sending an e-mail to a student organization mocking Christian fundamentalists.
Mirecki had referred to religious conservatives as "fundies," and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face." He has apologized for those comments.
"Tastes great!"
That's chilling.
A pickup and wool gloves? I'd like to know how many guys that drive pickups in Kansas wear wool gloves on their way to a beating?
it's a joke.... like this guy's alleged assault...
What's with the huge chins?
To match the eyeglasses.
The right wing wants blood, period. Theyre not going to stop until they see blood. Theyre not into anything else, he said. Whatever I do, whatever I say, they dont believe anything because thats the way they are... I know what happened. I got the hell beat out of me. They can say what they want.
This is not the nice stable guy I'd want teaching my children, but I guess he's pretty much the standard for liberals.
Or, perhaps a little rough sex with the boys and he needed an excuse to explain the bruises and scratches.
Not that there's anything wrong with that!
The best thing about exposing one of these staged 'hate crimes' is that anyone can subsequently victimize the person all they want, and nobody will believe them after they cried wolf.
The man was a Civil War Reenactor!

Let's see here, the same guy who wants to use other peoples money to give them "nice slap in their big fat face." is surprised when it happens to him? I think this prof should be fired on the grounds that he is too stupid to be teaching.
His own hate; his own violent language surely is enough to give him away. . .add to that the 'typical lib MO for making their point. . .
Anyway. ..I hope the investigation is a good one. . .
Even with no snow it does not sound like great driving around weather. I assume the fall colors are done. The guys story sounds fishy especially when he won't give the exact location where it happened.
No.
Ask this guy.
Fayetteville principal says he faked brutal beating by masked men
FAYETTEVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A school principal who claimed two masked men attacked him now says he made up the story, authorities said Tuesday.
Fayetteville Police said that Steve Steelman, who was found beaten Nov. 7 at Fayetteville Intermediate School after regular school hours, told authorities Monday that his injuries were self-inflicted
Steelman, 37, initially told police that two masked men, one with a handgun, attacked him in his school office. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Huntsville, Ala., to be treated for head injuries and a $26,000 reward was offered for information about the attack.
Notice the culprits seem to travel in pairs. Getting beat up by a single villian is too humiliating and three requires organizational skills of the rednecks.
Ragg wool gloves are a staple up here on the frozen tundra. We have probably 8-10 pairs (various styles) laying around the house.
a liberal judge would yell 'entrapment' before the papers were even filed.
Supposedly they knew it was him. How? Were they following and stalking him? If it was a happenstance, how many pieces have to fall into place for this to happen? (he's on the road, he's tailgated by people who have no reason to care about him except maybe his bumper stickers, he pulls over for them, they don't zoom ahead, he chooses not to pull ahead but to confront them in below-freezing temperatures, they actually recognize him and decide to beat him up but not too much)
Sound a bit far-fetched to you?
