'L.A.Times' Closes Plant, Cuts Another 110 Jobs
Published: December 05, 2005 9:30 PM ET
LOS ANGELES The Los Angeles Times said on Monday it is consolidating production at three facilities in downtown Los Angeles, and will close its Chatsworth plant, resulting in 110 job cuts.
The daily newspaper, owned by the Tribune Co., said it hopes to cut as many jobs as possible through voluntary separation packages.
``We deeply regret the impact this consolidation will have on employees, but the reality is that The Times has invested $500 million to modernize and build new facilities and expand color capacity since the Chatsworth plant became operational in 1983,'' Mark H. Kurtich, senior vice president of operations said in a prepared statement.
Consolidation in the newspaper's production facilities is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2006, after which time the company will begin to sell the 250,000 square-foot Chatsworth facility.
Shares of Tribune Co., which have traded between $30.64 and $43.41 over the last year, lost 2 cents in after-hours trading after closing down 53 cents at $30.86 on the New York Stock Exchange
Joy to the World!
Must be Karl Rove fault LOL!
Or Chicago Cubs fault since Cubs hasn't been to world series since 1945 LOL!!
I hate feeling so good about someone else's misery. The Germans have a word for it.
Torpedos in the water, Torpedos running Hot!!
*waits for moveon to announce a boycott*
The Trib's gotta pay the gas bill in Chicago this winter (current temperature, 10 degrees F.).
See, there IS good news from the AP!
Schadenfreude.
But the editors and managers keep their jobs, I bet. Funny, and I mean funny ha ha, how the economy is moving along nicely but the dinosaur media keeps shrinking.
'Tis the Season to be Jolly, Tra La La La La La Laaaaa...
I still say the Times makes a good fireplace starter.
Other than that...
"...dinosaur media keeps shrinking."
Yup. And internet ad revenue keeps rising, while nearly everyone agrees that newsprint ads are biggest waste of money anywhere.
My company sunk about $250k on them...and got NADA!!
Yep, and they don't even get a Christmas severance package because there is no longer any Christmas in their eyes.
BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
I kinda' regret this.
I want the lefties kept in their ghettoes of journalism.
They might do more damage, roaming the world and pretending to be
normal human beings.
You've got to feel sorry for the L.A. Times. How many of the people in Los Angeles either a) don't understand English b) can't read c) don't care for the politics of the Times or d) aren't native to California and don't particularly care about California?
Seriously, a dead medium in a state with more vanity than sanity. You're history, sweetheart. Best to find some rich old man to take care of you or you'll end up like Maureen Dowd - worthless and unwanted.
I MIGHT allow it to line my birdcage; but NO WAY will I allow it to wrap my fish.
Bit of Irony here. The downtown plant is located where the Japanese Flower and Fruit Mart was till Roosevelt shipped off all their suppliers to summer camp. One may argue that the Chandlers (the owners at the time) were Republican. Trust me at that level of wealth, there are no parties. (The preceding makes no sense, but great for Trivia)
