When registered voters were asked for their opinion of DeLay, 52 percent said it was unfavorable, while just 37 percent said they viewed him favorably. In 2004, despite negative headlines from a string of ethics complaints, DeLay won 55 percent of the vote in the 22nd District, which includes parts of four suburban counties south of Houston. President Bush also easily carried all four counties.
But when registered voters in the new poll were asked whether they were likely to choose DeLay or an unnamed Democrat in the 2006 midterm election, 49 percent said they would pick the Democrat, while just 36 percent said they would likely support DeLay, who has represented the district since 1984. The poll's sampling error was plus or minus 4 percentage points. (Posted 7 p.m.)

Delay won by 10% last time. But assuming Delay runs again, he will either beat the rap, or be convicted. If he is convicted, he won't run again. So the Dems won't have a chance to run against a Delay twisting slowly in the legal wind, unless the Abramoff scandal bites at his heels.
My best guess is that the race will be tossup.

Go to his website and donate to his defense fund.
That's one thing you can do.

He needs to go just for his arrogance: "There's no more fat left to cut in the Federal budget."
Screw that. Screw him. America deserves better, and Republicans who lie to gain office and power ain't it.

It's going to take quite some more dirt against DeLay to threaten his chances for re-election in the 22nd district. So far, back here, it's playing that this is a political trick by Ronnie Earle and the Rats, despite the best efforts of the Houston Chronicle.
DeLay is in a bit of trouble. Moderates and those who aren't informed are troubled. My take on it is that it's manageable.

There was another poll out not long ago showing the same results if I remember correctly but can't remember who conducted it.
Strange things have happened with some powerful congress critters here in Texas.. Just a few miles to the East of this district was Jack Brooks who no one thought could be defeated and I remember watching him on tv at his campaign headquarters that night laughting it up. Until the western side of the district went against him and he was defeated by a no name Steve Stockman who got defeated the next election. That was in 1994 when the public purged some of the congress.
I really don't think DeLay will get defeated but then it has happened before when the populace decides it's time to throw the incumbent out.

The district is only marginally GOP, and becoming more marginal with time.

I understand that DeLay won with only 55% of the vote in his first run in the revised district. It took in some of the democrat votes if I recall correctly. The democrat got only 41%.
Now I agree that if DeLay continues to have legal problems he'll be out. But barring that I think he'll win even against a carpetbagger like Nick Lampson who I think is still renting a residence in the district.

Your quote is wrong. You're sloppy with your facts.
To: FreeReign
You're right. DeLay didn't ram through multiple porkfests this summer while denying there was anything worth cutting.
Never happened.
So, how's this week's Koolaid shipment?

Now you misrepresent what I said.
Again, you're sloppy with your facts and your quote about DeLay continues to be wrong.
Take your koolaid and ship it.

Feel free to play all the semantic games you wish. Just remember this thread, and dozens like it, when it finally dawns on the Republican Party that many millions have just walked away from them. Some get a clue sooner than others.

Go back and read your own link. Those are not his words.
How dare I point that out to you, huh?

CNN poll?
Why didn't they just have the Village Voice conduct the poll?
To: deport
DeLay has never really had to campaign for re-election. Many years I've never even gotten a single piece of campaign literature in the mail, and there were no television or radio spots.
I think the Ronnie Earle attack will change that this year. There is a certain segment, even among Republicans, who are politically tone deaf, who just hear some vague background noise about DeLay being a crook. He's going to have to reach them somehow and reassure them in order to be re-elected.
