Gun-crazy Washington
Congress is in bed with the gun lobby
December 2, 2005
In the days since New York City police officer Dillon Stewart was gunned down, Mayor Michael Bloomberg has sounded a perfectly rational call for tougher federal gun laws. The city has rigorous laws of its own but is plagued by guns that flood in from states where laws are more porous. "We've got to stop this craziness," Bloomberg said. Tragically, his entreaty will fall on deaf ears in Washington.
Congress has been sprinting away from rational gun control in recent years. It has, in fact, done much to make the business lucrative for gun manufacturers and dealers, including the small minority of dealers who account for the majority of guns diverted from the legal market into the hands of criminals.
Consider that in the last few years Congress has:
Refused to reauthorize the assault weapons ban despite wide support for the ban among police groups.
Given gun makers and gun dealers immunity from lawsuits.
Refused to prohibit gun sales to people on the government's no-fly list of suspected terrorists. That's right: People too dangerous to board commercial aircraft can saunter into any gun shop in America and walk out with all the firepower their money can buy.
Restricted access to the federal firearms trace system database to only law enforcement officials, and then only to track particular, individual guns. Researchers, advocates and local officials can no longer access the federal data to track more generally where the guns on the nation's streets come from. That's appalling when, according to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the majority of the guns diverted from legal to illegal traffic are traced to 1 percent of the nation's gun dealers.

More Leftist tripe from Newsday
Sounds like the good guys are winning, excellent.
Newsday just announced massive layoffs.....hopefully they will fester and die along with the rest of the MSM.
I work just a few blocks away from their facility and it does my heart good to know they are reeling from citizen backlash against the MSM.
And every time a liberal politician loses office, an angel gets it's wings.
Gee, anything more we can do to make the lefties wring their hands?
I'd be happy to oblige the continuing gun freedom legislation so that they can add more to their list of complaints.
Hey MAYOR!
Make guns LEGAL in New York and the illegal market drys up!
Additionally, when the potential for citizens to be armed increases, they are less likely to become VICTIMS!
Just border states doing the work that NY won't.
And for good reason no less! It's not generally supported by the majority of American voters.
These people are prehistoric mammals thrashing about in the tar pits. They know that gun control is a losing issue and that gun ownership is at an all-time high.
Hey, Bloomberg, you have more human trash per square yard in NYC than you can handle, don't expect the free parts of the country to suffer because of your great liberal experiments.
I doubt it, but one can always hope ...
Your solution is too simple, too logical, and might actually work. We can't have any of that now can we? I am sooooooo glad to be in Texas....:-)
Then we will all be safe.
They will try to use the U.N. to force (gun) control on us.
Well Mr. Bloomburg, if your city was more pro-gun rights, the illegal market wouldn't exist. Isn't that the same argument people on the left use for making marijuana legal?
New York is completly anti-gun (they do allow some guns, hell they probably have too) but it's enough to give criminals a great market.
The answer is not to take guns away from law abiding people, that has been well proved to be counter productive. The most effective answer is to take people off the street permanently who use guns in crimes. Commit a crime with a gun, go to prison for a long time with no possibility of parole. I believe that building more prisons and hiring more guards would be less expensive than trying to enforce unconstitutional and unenforcible gun laws which are useless for keeping guns away from criminals anyway. Why is it so hard to understand that criminals are by definition people who don't obey laws, and gun laws are no exception?
The only civillian folks in Washington who will have
guns will be the criminals?
Notice that very few uniformed military get mugged in Washington. Many of them carry.
