MEXICO CITY The number of Mexicans leaving their country almost all for the United States has reached 400,000 per year and will continue to grow for several more years, the head of Mexico's National Population Council said on Friday.
The increase in migration has coincided with the United States increasing security on its southern border.
"The effort to increase control of the (U.S.) border has not reduced migratory flows one little bit," Council Secretary General Elena Zuniga said. "After 15 years, what we have seen is a growth in migration, and growth in a way that is much less safe."
She said increased border controls have largely served to help fuel growth in migrant trafficking organizations.
The migration is fueled mainly by demographic pressure and a lack of jobs in Mexico, Zuniga said. It will eventually turn downward when those pressures ease, mainly through economic growth and reduced birthrates, she said.
"We predict that we will not be able to sustain the growth in migration," because of a drop in birth rates here, she said.

Unbelievable!
The illegals aliens are sending so much money to their families that they are living a life of comparative luxury; it's so good, they don't even have to work, thanks to President Bush and the American taxpayers.
How many more years until Mexico is depopulated?
[CIA Factbook: Population: 106,202,903 (July 2005 est.)]
The migration is fueled mainly by demographic pressure and a lack of jobs in Mexico, Zuniga said.
"Because our government really, really sucks," Señora Zuniga added later.
Only if we allow it. And if it does happen, it can be laid at the feet of our federal government, a government whose fundamental policy continues to be "Lets do nothing some more."
yep!
Israel has proven that border fences can be effective. The open borders lobby should stop lying about them
Israel's multiple fence, border fence system. This fence is designed to succeed!! Sensors, surveillance cameras, lots of barbed wire, ditches to stop vehicles from ramming through it, paved access roads for fast armed response etc etc.
Hmmm, this guy has developed the same opinion regarding the impact of the Bush plan that I have.
Do you understand how much money that must be that is being sent to Mexico? (even for their own standards)....income for which no taxes are being paid into the U.S. withholding/social security?
It's galling!!!
So do I. We are in Washington state. Our Mex population has doubled, in the last 10 years, mostly notably in the last 5! Our schools are overcrowded and crime has shot up dramatically, record drug busts, drive bys and swollen welfare rolls. It has to stop!
Apparently we're the World Department of Social Services.
Ya think maybe we ought to let George know that we have seen this? And the rest of our elected officials.
Right, Israel knows how to build a damn fence. Our "fence" has hand-holds and looks more like a ladder.
You should see California (Mexifornia). Americans will be the minority if George W. Bush has his way.
Who will pay the bills when the takers outnumber the givers? No one in this administration has uttered a word about this. Third world status, here we come.
I don't think America can take three more years of this first Mexican President.
Yeah.Such hard workers they are.I guess they're sitting on asses that Americans just won't sit on.
I will back President Bush until hell freezes over on all issues except this one.
Get the illegals out of our country!
As we don't have any financial information/class status about the families mentioned in this article concering the families of the illegal aliens who are receiving enough money to quit working in Mexico, I'm sure some, if not many, of those families may well fall into one of the categories listed below.
I strongly doubt, however, that illegals' would come to the U.S. to work if their U.S. income merely allowed their Mexican families to continue to live in poverty, or relative poverty, especially seeing as how the article states many families are doing well enough to quit working altogether and live entirely off what is sent to them by the illegal aliens working in the U.S.
The cost of living ranges are set within the costs for a middle to upper class family lifetsyle, which considers a $1300 to $17400 USD monthly income. Included in the costs are: Housing, Food, Education, Transportation, Clothing, Recreation, Health, Furniture and Appliances, and Personal Use. Monthly rents are taken for the average for each city, and may vary according to market situation. Prices are in USD, based on an exchange rate of 11.5 pesos to the dollar.
