WASHINGTON, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- FBI agents and Homeland Security officials have been investigating the report of a possible missile fired at an American Airlines plane taking off from Los Angeles International Airport.
Sources told ABC News in Los Angeles that the pilot of American Airlines Flight 621, en route to Chicago, radioed air traffic controllers after takeoff from LAX. He told them a missile had been fired at the aircraft and missed.
The plane was over water when the pilot said he saw a smoke trail pass by the cockpit.
FBI agents believe it was a flare or a bottle rocket, but say they may never know if that's what it actually was, KYW Newsradio 1060 reported.
Acme now makes an even better rocket, you know.
You should be ! We don't want to add to the global warming problem.
I hadn't seen the 6000 plus feet. No, that completely rules out any kind of firework, flare, or bottle rocket, by a couple of orders of magnitude.
Just another isolated incident...
Oh, Acme. Never mind. :)
Even if a bottle rocket was able to penetrate the usual altitude, would a smoke trail be visible by the pilot of a fast moving jet? My guess is no.
Sorry guys. At least now I know where is went now.
A bottle Rocket?
It is really wonderful how much the FBI has improved over the last six years under President Bush.
I feel Much Safer Now.
"A commercial airliner departing LAX over the ocean would be at least 3500 feet"
Have you ever flown out of LA International? Looked like to me just a couple hundred feet above the beach.
I think an airline pilot would know if it was a missile or not. I'll trust the pilot over what others think.
Not to mention... Even if a bottle rocket could ever make it that high, how big it have to be for the pilot to notice a trail of smoke when you're moving at 400 or 500 mph?!
glenn beck fan? lol
Flares are bright, bottle rockets too whimpy - don't have the fuel or the speed to chase a plane even at low-altitude immediatly after take off.
The bigger question is does anyone believe a SAM would miss at that distance?
I'm suspecting some home made device.
Not enough times to know...I just looked at a map and the runway is indeed right on the water.
But do you really believe that bottle rocket or flare was what he saw?
The more likely innocent culprit would be a D model rocket...
I wonder why the FBI and the feds always immediatley offer up such unfounded conclusions.
Why don't they state: We are investigating the incident and havn't ruled anything out from terrorism to bottle rockets.
"....an investigating FBI agent believes that bottle rockets can move at such speeds and reach 6000+ feet...."
Acchhh! He knows perfectly well that the pilot had just jettisoned a fuel pump from inside the middle fuel tank that was about to start sparking and explode the tank/airliner......the bottle-rocket story is cover so the bad guys don't learn that we can jettison soon-to-spark pumps.
Now -- the REAL question is who paid to plant this story?
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking, as you can see above! My server keeps losing connectivity so you beat me to the punch! It's jammin' up on me right now, as a matter of fact! DAMN!
And that is true also. Amazing how ignorant the American public is that allows the MSM to publish the most ludicrous reports from the moronic reporters. If the public were to hold the MSM accountable, this would stop. As it is, the masses are so dumb, they swallow everything shoveled their way so the MSM just keeps on shoveling.
And as someone who actually has used Flare guns, their max altitude is about 1000 feet on a good calm day.
