MADISON, Wis. One of law enforcement's biggest objections to allowing people to carry concealed weapons may have been overcome.
Sponsors of a Republican concealed-carry bill say they've reached a compromise with police groups. An amendment would allow officers on the road to run checks on cars they stop, to see if the owner has a permit to pack a weapon.
Casey Perry is executive director of the Wisconsin Troopers Association. He says the change would protect both people in the car and officers on the approach.
The bill's creators have insisted the list of permit holders remain secret to ensure criminals don't prey on people who aren't carrying.
Perry says under the amendment, any officer caught running registrations excessively to find out who has permits would be charged with a misdemeanor.
Melanie Fonder is a spokeswoman for Governor Doyle. She says Doyle still won't sign the bill.
He vetoed a previous concealed carry bill that cleared the Legislature.
Authors of the bill plan a news conference with police representatives tomorrow to give details of the amendment.
"I don't blame LEOs for wanting to know as soon as possible that you have a firearm with you."
Please think about what you have said! The cops don't have to worry about the people with the carry permit. And even if someone with a carry permit means to harm the cop, the carry permit will NOT be the first thing the cop sees!
This is another case of the statists training us in compliance. It serves no useful purpose whatsoever except to further the compliance training of law abiding citizens. It does not make cops safer; just makes them feel more powerful. It is a way of portraying people who carry legally as being just as dangerous as people who don't comply with the law. And the sheeple will buy into it.
Stupid law, bad law, destructive law.
What? There haven't been any shootings!!?? Mercy me, what is a Liberal Looking For A Cause to do?? Oh, I know,... pass some more laws to prevent any more cop killings from not happening!
And the cop knows you are a "law abiding citizen" exactly how? Should he just assume it?
And the cop knows you are a "law abiding citizen" exactly how?
You mentioned that cops should not fear armed law-abiding citizens. I asked how they were to know that they were law-abiding.
In fact the cop finding that you have a permit would reassure him that you ARE a law-abiding citizen since the other kind can't get a permit.
And how exactly is it a bad thing that the police officer pulling your over knows that there is a good chance there is a gun in the car? He probably isn't pulling you over for being a 'law abiding citizen' in the first place. Ususally it's for a traffic infraction or possible even a crime. They have a right to know what to expect when they walk up to the window.
That's an Excellent point to make. Wouldn't want anyone to think it's ok to carry a handgun localy without the CCH permit..... But a Winchester behind the rear seat is ok, right?
Michigan also
Figured you might understand- "what is the police afraid of". Guess not.
A Winchester behind the seat *in plain view* is okay. I think the reasoning behind that is that a long arm is a rather unwieldy weapon to use inside a vehicle to catch a peace officer by surprise with. (How many rules of grammar did I violate there?) Handguns are obviously a different story.
I was a cop working in a high crime area of Chicago. For my safety, I ALWAYS assumed that ANY citizen with whom I had contact could be armed. It worked quite well for me for 28 years and I took lotsa guns off of bad guys. (convicted felons, not law abiding citizens)
McDonalds worker suspended for shooting at robber
By The Associated Press
December 30, 2005
NEW ALBANY, Ind. A McDonalds maintenance worker who pulled out his gun and fired two shots at a woman who was robbing another employee at gunpoint has been suspended from his job.
While police officials say Clifton Brown Jr. violated no laws last week when he fired the shots shortly after the restaurants midnight closing, the franchise owner said Brown violated a ban on guns at the restaurant.
The shooting happened as Brown and a co-worker were taking out the trash and a woman, who was on foot, put a gun to the back of the second employee. She then robbed the restaurant in the city just north of Louisville, Ky., through the drive-up window, police said.
Brown told police that he pulled his gun out and ordered the fleeing robber to stop. She then raised her own gun and he fired two shots, which apparently missed the woman, before she continued to flee.
City police Detective Keith Whitlow said he was not overly enthused about untrained individuals engaging in stuff like that, but that once the robber raised her gun, Brown was in jeopardy and had a right to defend himself.
Brown has a permit to carry the handgun, Whitlow said.
Restaurant owner Ron Vanover said Thursday that Brown had been suspended from his job while the shooting was being reviewed. He said he considered Browns actions inappropriate.
I think thats common sense, Vanover said. Money can be replaced; lives cannot.
Brown could not be located for comment as no home telephone number in the New Albany area was listed in his name.
BUMP
The ones with permits will be the ones who would give the police the least hassle anyhow.
And if it's stolen, the occupant is quite unlikely to be the registered owner so the registered owner's ccw/non-ccw isn't going to matter anyhow.
