Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, Merry F#%$in Christmas (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.
There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:
Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgineven after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.
Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.
Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.
Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:
I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.
Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.
Get a clue, brethren. Jesus said the world will HATE you. And you are going to - what - protest, write letters -- when His words are found to be true?
Read the New Testament for a change.
I can't stand this guy. Smarmy and not funny in the least to me.. perfectly quafed highlights in the hair. He's supposed to be a real man...he's just ohhhhhh sooooo coool.... sick of this Hollywood type. some people are born funny. He is not one of them.
Alas, I fear you are correct.
all religion is based on faith of things that cannot be understood
Catholic League is a little too sensitive
maybe you are a bit too callous and desensitized to this kind of hate speech. Good to know you "wouldn't want a steady diet of this...
But your dismissal of others and condoning words do little to support that statement.
Btw, the Bible is simple enough for Children to understand. Christ was born for your sins, he loves you and wants you to recognize your need for a Saviour. No one with sin enters heaven, everyone will be judged because sin deserves punishment. Jesus is there for you to grab a hold of...his grace is a gift that does not need to be mocked.
There is no need to think too hard on it. The Bible will teach you Gods word and his plan for your life.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Here is my letter:
Dear Doug,
I usually enjoy Comedy Central and most of its programming. Not all of the material is funny but I have always stopped to check out what is on. I understand how programing brings ratings and ratings brings advertisers. Advertisers pay the bills and make your business profitable. I even enjoy jokes that polk fun at me, my heritage and my religion when they are done in good taste or are at least funny. I believe that since most of American's have beliefs rooted in Christianity, that un-funny, degrading and seemingly anti-catholic humor might be bad for your business.
I will be reprogramming the TVs in my home to remove Comedy Central so as to avoid any advertising me or my family might be exposed to that supports Leary's over-the-top monologue. Comedian's work hard and sometimes new material just does not work. This material does not work. It would be in the best interest of Leary's career and Comedy Central's business to tell Leary that he needs some new material and then avoid airing this offensive trash here in America.
If you insist on using it, sell it to Al Jazeera. I bet there are crowds in the Middle East that would find this material very funny.
If Comedy Central does decide not to air this program, please e-mail me. I will respectfully program my TV and resume patronizing your programming and advertisers.
Thank you for your time.
Denis Leary's quote,
Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgineven after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

I've never been a fan of Dennis Leary. While I don't mind blue humor (Richard Pryor is one of my all time favorites as is Kinnison), Leary seems to think that the more times he can work the words "f**k" and ""S**t" into a paragraph the funnier it is. This doesn't work.
Sure, His words have proved true at many points after His Resurrection. That doesn't mean we have to approve of it.
It's ok to criticize Islam, but don't lose your head...
Perhaps I should have said that most people who claim to be Christians believe in the virgin birth of Christ. I was trying to avoid one of those interminable arguments about who is "really" a Christian. :)
As you say, most Protestants don't believe Mary was ever-virgin.
One of the more unusual things I've learned recently is that the Koran is very explicit that Jesus was born of a virgin. Moslems just doesn't believe he is God or the son of God.
Of course not, what sort of controversy would that generate?
Donohue and his Catholic League fail to grasp that controversy is gravy for this guy.
Mine is!
Yep. Be a good subject and take your beating quietly. It's harmless if it's wrapped in "humor" or "art".
Have you - or ANYONE - ever seen or heard a comedian that bashes liberal values - EVER?
Okay, perhaps there was some passing comedian who made a crack about a liberal idea, but how about a consistently comedian who uses liberal values as his comedy routine? How about a tv sitcom poking fun at PETA, or Greenpeace, or other liberal ideas? I never see 'em.
As you say, most Protestants don't believe Mary was ever-virgin.
Well, I must be in the minority because as a Lutheran I was taught all my life that she was a virgin.
Aaaah, nothing like an ex-Catholic venting, with a Christmas special bashing Christmas and Catholicism.
Wierd. I wouldn't watch this. But, then, my TV gets lots and lots of channels. Comedy Central is one I don't watch.
I guess some folks have TV sets that only get Comedy Central and have no on/off switch. They'd be forced to watch. That's just wrong.
I guess only pornographers and filthy-mouthed comedians get to decide what kind of culture we have.
Christian faith is based on the assertion that
Jesus was born of a virgin , that Christ did
"miracles" (p.s. they're not supposed to be
everyday happenings,y'now...don't be surprised if
it's hard to believe), and died and rose again for
the sins of the world (which are many, in case you
haven't noticed). These events are asserted to have
taken place in real Newtonian and quantum space/time.
We'll see if people say "Merry LearyMass" in the future.
But I gotta admit, the overcommercialization of Christ Mass,
and the quiet tacit denial of the central truths of
Christ will certainly put an end to the common
celebration of the holyday as we know it at this time
in the universes history.
It is EXACTLY this TOLERANCE mindset that is the problem to begin with, Wacka. You sure you're not liberal? Liberals don't like to stand up for any JUST cause and are afraid to really grow a spinal cord and stand up for their convictions...your answer seems like a simple appeasement copout...RDDB...
