Denis Leary's Sick Idea of Humor (Bashes Christian Belief)

DENIS LEARY’S SICK IDEA OF HUMOR

Tonight [November 29], Comedy Central will air a special by Denis Leary, “Merry F#%$in’ Christmas” (it first aired two nights ago and is scheduled to air again on Dec. 17). The show consists of several skits, a cartoon and musical performances.

There is a skit about lesbian nuns, and a song by “Our Lady of Perpetual Suffering Church Choir” about a hooker. But by far the most offensive part of the show is the monologue by Denis Leary on the origins of Christmas. Here is part of what he says:

“Merry Christmas. Tonight we celebrate the birth of the baby Jesus, whose mom, Mary, just happens to be a virgin—even after she apparently gave birth to Jesus. At least that is what the Catholic Church would have you believe.

“Tom Cruise is taking a lot of s--- for belonging to a religion, Scientology, that believes aliens came to this planet 75 million years ago. That is nothing. I was raised Catholic. We believe Mary was a virgin and Jesus ended up walking on water, creating a bottomless jug of wine and rising from the dead. Oh, yeah, and Tom Cruise is crazy.

“Listen, Christmas is built on a line of bulls---. Do I believe there was a baby Jesus? You bet your ass I do. But I believe that nine months before he was born someone sure as s--- banged the hell out of his mom.”

Catholic League president Bill Donohue responded as follows:

“I am asking Catholic League members, and friends of the Catholic League, to e-mail Doug Herzog, the president of Comedy Central, requesting that he nix the Dec. 17th showing of this vile special, and any future showings that might be planned. He can be contacted at Doug.Herzog@comedycentral.com.

“Hate speech dressed in humorous garb is still hate speech. Leary is obviously bedeviled by some disorder, but nothing excuses this crap.”

The religious stuff isn't well suited to his act. It's too "analytical," if that's the right word. He's at his best when showing disproportionate outrage in observational humor.

Note to Mr. Leary: Cut back on the Meth and Magic Mushrooms.
You're thinking should get clearer.
A little more niacin in the diet and maybe the Tourette's will go away, too.

I keep on seeing your tagline as "godless atheist".

Really, is there any other kind?

Cheers!

Leary, for reasons unknown, is one of those guys who is a celebrity for being a celebrity. Like Zsa Zsa Gabor. I couldn't name a single movie he's ever been in (I assume he's been in a movie?) and I saw that he had a TV show (about a fireman?) which I don't even think is on anymore. Other than that, I used to grimace whenever I saw those disturbing commercials he did for some computer company a few years back. Other than that....?

Anybody got the scoop on where this little pissant Leary came from?
His "claim to fame", if any?

I'm sorry I missed it, gotta TiVo the thing next time.

If this offends you, don't listen to "Lock and Load". Leary is great.

Dennis Leary's kind of humor is prurient, tasteless, and gratuitous and provides a glide-path for our society's devolution to the 'dark side'.

It's like you've known me for years.

Yep, like watching Eddie Murphy's Raw -- I'd hear beeps in my sleep after a half hour of that sheet.

And of course you're still quoting it, I'm sure. I am.
"This is MY HOUSE."
"Jujubees."
"These are just regular crackers."
"Eddiiiie. I want HALF!"
"I got McDonald's... you can't afford it..."
"You cannot say filth florin' filth!"

And that's just from memory because it was brilliant friggin' comedy.

Why don't they trash the muslims on a comedy show?

1. It makes no sense to trash Muslims on a show revolving around CHRISTmas (duh).

2. Watch "Mind of Mencia" on Comedy Central. Lots of fun and he dishes it out to the Muslims plenty.

If he tries really really hard, maybe he can do better than this in the future... [sarcasm]

Good thing Sam Kennison isn't around. He'd send folks into fits. Of course, he was one of the few who could do religious humor -- mostly because he knew it from the inside.

No doubt... the "proof that Jesus never married" skit will last into eternity as the funniest possible blasphemy.

I don't worry much about that; I figure God has a sense of humor or He wouldn't have made so many Democrats.

Sam was funny. And he knew his bible. I saw him do a preaching bit at Catch once that included long passages...he also did a riff on Pat Robertson that was a hoot.

One of the more unusual things I've learned recently is that the Koran is very explicit that Jesus was born of a virgin. Moslems just doesn't believe he is God or the son of God.

You know, one kind of follows from the other, so muslims are really going out on a limb here. Given how extremely dubious the claim of a virgin birth is, I would think that if someone was willing to accept the former they could accept the latter. Few things astonish me as much as the contortions of reason and rationality that humans will put themselves through on a daily basis in order to maintain their castles in the sky.

This is typical DiPaolo humor:

"Even my people, the Italians, now we're politically correct. We don't like the way we're portrayed on the Sopranos... I love the way we're portrayed on the Sopranos. You wanna complain how Italian people are portrayed on TV let's start with those Olive Garden commercials. I'd rather be portrayed as a mob boss who kills people and cheats on his wife that someone who takes someone from italy to the Olive Garden."

This is uncle Vinny from Sicily, we took him to the Olice Garden... next day the family car exploded. Maybe he didn't like the Bologna Alfredo? What, was the Winn-Dixie out of Spaghetti-O's?

Here's a sign I saw on the side of a bus today I thought might be a little insensitive... 'Help cure muscular dystrophy by joining our Walkathon.' Yeah... let's wipe out anorexia with a bake sale. We'll raise money for Alzheimer's by selling Trivial Pursuit Games."

I fail to see why virgin birth implies divinity.

God could, for his own unknowable reasons, choose to have one of his prophets born of a virgin without that person necessarily having to be God himself.
