cannot say enough about the U.S. Army and Marines who are carrying most of the fight for us in Iraq. They are courageous, smart, effective, innovative, very honorable and very proud. After a Thanksgiving meal with a great group of Marines at Camp Fallujah in western Iraq, I asked their commander whether the morale of his troops had been hurt by the growing public dissent in America over the war in Iraq. His answer was insightful, instructive and inspirational: "I would guess that if the opposition and division at home go on a lot longer and get a lot deeper it might have some effect, but, Senator, my Marines are motivated by their devotion to each other and the cause, not by political debates." Thank you, General. That is a powerful, needed message for the rest of America and its political leadership at this critical moment in our nation's history. Semper Fi.
Mr. Lieberman is a Democratic senator from Connecticut.

There's always been something I liked about Joe Lieberman - been a couple things I didn't. For a politician he seems to be earnest and fairly honorable in his dealings. He and Gore would have never gotten along the way our Pres and VP do.
I'll never forget for as long as I live, the day he aligned himself with the likes of that screeching moonbat Al Gore to be VP in 2000. He could have turned down the offer, but he refused to do so. To this day, he refused to acknowledge his party has been hijacked by the far left, something Zell Miller has made quite clear on numerous occasions both on the floor of the Senate, at the 2004 RNC convention, and in his book.
People don't just wake up one day and decide they are a Democrat, or decide they are a Republican. The process takes time, and in nearly every switch involving a public official, there is some degree of principle and some degree of political self-interest.
This is a long way of saying this: remember, Zell gave the keynote address at the 1992 convention as well. The 1992 Democrat convention.
This guy has stabbed the President in the back on previous instances -- and I see no reason to trust him here.

Similar to what I was thinking.

I wonder if Lieberman is going to retire, or will he run as an independent?
Leiberman has gone to battle in the Democrat primaries with the wackiest most insane groups they attract, and refused to renounce the war and his vote. It cost him. He became the first booted from the primary. That earns him back some respect in my book for 2000 and other events since.
On this one issue time and again he has refused to back down.
he is no Zell Miller. he is a Liberal partisan Democrat. But, on this he has been more responsible than his Party and I do believe the reason is because he truly "gets" this goes deeper than politics.
I don't think it can be honestly claimed Leiberman hasn't stuck it out through the rougher crossings we've had. Otherwise he wouldn't have written this op ed during this period in time.
So that's why Henry Waxman, Gary Ackerman, and all the other Jewish Democrats are so in favor of this war, right?
Liberman's just positioning himself for the next campaign. He's counting on the democrats openly anti-war efforts to backfire on them making him the most viable candidate to the public...a hawkish liberal.

Oh, don't be so hard on Lieberman.
I've seen many on here "stab the President" in the back.....many times.
I'm glad to see a Democrat who will speak up for what is right...not just what he thinks Kennedy or Kerry wants him to say.
Don't get me started on Pelosi.
Don't put your eggs in this guy's basket.
Lieberman is the Democrat that I dislike the least.
Except for Zell, of course, but I like Zell, so I guess he doesn't count.
Oh, and Scoop Jackson...but he's dead...
But his constituency isn't mainly anti-war types and he wants to stay in the Senate.

Joe is no Zell; he just isn't quite as creepy as Dodd and Kennedy, etc.!

Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
That's about it, but believe me, he is no Zell Miller.
