GULF EVACUEES ON THEIR OWN
Star-Ledger ^ | Monday, November 28, 2005 | BY RUSSELL BEN-ALI

"As of December 1, if you choose to remain in the hotel, you will be responsible for paying the bill with funds you have in hand, including any funds that FEMA has already provided to you," read the notice from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to the evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"What am I supposed to do, go out in the street?" asked Sanders, 65, a former airline customer service representative, as she sat on the edge of a bed in the Comfort Suites Newark room she shares with grandsons Brandon, 3, and Shandon, 2.

(snip)

FEMA said it would extended its deadline until Dec. 15 for evacuees to find less expensive housing in hotels in New Jersey and most of the nation. For displaced victims living in 10 southern and western states, the deadline was extended until Jan. 7.

Already, the government has picked up the tab for hurricane evacuees in more than 49,820 hotel rooms around the country. The cost has been estimated at $3 million per day.

(snip)

More than 7,000 people fled the Gulf states to New Jersey and are trying to rebuild their lives after the two storms. Most are staying in apartments or with family or friends. FEMA, however, said it is still paying for 57 hotel rooms across the state. The agency could not supply the number of people in those hotel rooms.

gee, i guess they better start thinking. 1st off make them work. nj has a work program for those on wefare. if they arent working then find a state that wants deadbeats. i feel sorry for any 65 year old woman who has to take care of her grandchildren. but theres daycare.and why arent the parents paying her child support? nj has high rent, but if you look you can find cheap rent, maybe not in the best area but you can. newark isnt the nicest place but neither was new orelans. if i lost everything id move somewhere that had housing and jobs and i would stop whining and get on with life. this govt/fema help was never supposed to be life long help. i am sorry its ending by the holidays but taxpayers can not justify hotels and help forever. all good things come to an end. so get up and get a job and get on with life. i am sure she can find some kind of a job and the childrens parents can send her some money to support her grandkids. if they have passed away she needs to look into ssi. lifes not fair in general but thats how it is.

Government paying hotel costs for evacuees who moved out

November 28, 2005 - 8:39AM
SOUTHFIELD (AP) - Hurricane Katrina evacuee Anthony Wells Senior moved back to New Orleans three weeks ago. So did Yarnell Green. But both Hurricane Katrina evacuees still have rooms at the Southfield Hotel - courtesy of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The rooms are among nine at the hotel - formerly the Southfield Ramada - that are registered to evacuees who have moved out or who could not be located. The government is paying at least $325 a week for the rooms.

Hotel administrator Wallace Wells says some residents left without checking out and it's possible they will return or that family members are using the rooms.

A FEMA spokesman says the hotel reimbursement program is nearly impossible to police and that FEMA would learn of problems only if "someone calls in a tip."

This is really a disorganized mess!

Can't New Orleans be subject to having to pay the federal government back? They are the ones that created this situation and their corruption and dependency conditioning.

I think once the ports are open again, New Orleans should be subjected to some payment plan to reimburse.

But give them a little lead-time to get on.

Color me jaded......but I believe that most have had a lifetime to "get on".... Those that feed at the trough will do so until the feed runs out.....

Thirty days for getting your rent and deposit money up.

Shouldn’t that have been a priority from day 1?

The hotel I stay in when I make my regular trips to California has been charging me extra lately because it is full of FEMA-financed gulf coasters.

The ones I saw mostly sit around all day drinking beer and watching TV. I've heard no talk amongst them about looking for a job or trying to improve their lot.

Our tax dollars at work.

After reading the article on FEMA's website, it sounds like they will still work to provide housing, just not expensive hotel rooms. I don't know what the complaints are about.

I wonder who is going to pick up the tab to renovate these hotel rooms after they leave.

Here is another question...

If all these refugees that are in need are dispersed to other states...

Where are all of these toys going?

Gift drive focuses on Katrina kids

The big toy drive is bringing the toys to the gulf states (Louisiana)

But all of these refugees are in other states?

>>>Yes, but did they expect it to last forever? How much did the ones complaining do to help themselves in preparation for the cutoff?>>>

Are you kidding me? Don't you realize that the government was supposed to pay for their room, board, clothing and food until the entire city of New Orleans has been rebuilt and ready to move into!?!

---I thought that was what the first $2000.00 checks that were given were for. That is enough to rent an apartment (maybe not high dollar, but a roof over their head)and get a job. I have read a lot of people have found jobs and have settled in taking care of their families by now. If they can do it, it CAN be done by others if they look hard enough.

Plus, this has been a bonanza for the states as the Feds assumed all the welfare and medicare load.

The real question in my mind is where is the mother (or mothers)? Are they still collecting a welfare check for the kids while grandma is doing the same?

Forbid I ever find myself or family in these circumstances and although the evacuees were distraught from losing their homes ... evacuees had remarkable opportunities. In the DFW area, there were multiple job fairs (corporations opening up positions to evacs only that were not available to permanent residents) and people/towns opening themselves up to all evacuees to assist them in starting their new lives. I guess it is easier to do nothing than accept a golden opportunity to start a new life.

Why does the federal government owe displaced people free hotel rooms in fancy hotels for months on end? Perhaps one can make a case a temporary cot and meals in a shelter is warranted, but to continue housing them after 3 months...?

Instead of offering "free" housing, FEMA should have offered to pick up 50% of the rent and let them pick up the rest. The slugs would then have more incentive to find a new location and job instead of sitting around eating junk food all day watching Oprah! while waiting for somebody else to buy them a new house or welfare apartment back in New Orleans.

Is it any wonder some people act this way when they have been mired in government dependency on the Welfare Plantation all of their natural lives? Now would be a good time for them to change their parasitic personal habits - an excellent time, in fact!
