I heard on the radio this morning, that a pilot of a passenger jet departing LAX claimed to have narrowly avoided being hit by a missile. It was reported that the jet was about 6,000 feet in altitude & over the ocean when the event occurred. The news report further stated that authorities believe it was possibly a flare or a "bottle rocket."
I googled but found nothing. Anyone else have some info on this? I dont recall whether it was CBS or NBC radio news.
There was a claim of responsibility. It was "not credible" according to the same FBI that refused to interview witnesses to the shoot-down, and that tailed one prominent witness for months afterwards.
You are more correct than you think! Terrorism is not about MAJOR actions. It is about the slow building of fear and disillusionment with the ability of the government to protect you. The ultimate goal is to "convince" you to make the government change thier policies (e.g. surrender to terrorist demands).
Thus even "failed" attempts (when publicized) can greatly benifit the terrorists as the fact the "they are still there, plotting" and "it's only a matter of time" both aid the terrorist - they want us to live in fear and to dread the next newscast!
So, yeah, targeting "one plane" - thus proving that they CAN is entirely possible.
Probably 100% true. The initial report got past a sleepy editor, who may get fired, and once the FBI heard the broadcast, they flipped out and made the standard "STFU" call to ABC, Now we'll probably never hear another word about it.

see post #21 he/she heard it also!
And I thought my .45 had stopping power. I'm going to get me some of those for home defense. :-)
Thanks for that info. This is probably a terrorist attack that failed. After Flight 700, I'm sure our Coast Guard and Navy went into massive terrorist-prevention mode. The success can be measured in the fact that there has only been one reported incident like this -- this one -- since Flight 700.
Yep, and I've got the scorch marks to prove it from trying to enlighten a few to the reality of explosive combustion of Jet-A at 14,000' msl.....
Even is one had it, officials would have claimed tail windsheer or wind ripples as the cause.
[Don't want to alarm the sheeple, ya know. 9-11 would have been claimed a bad accident had it not been for that 2nd pesky plane and that 3rd pesky plane in Washington and that 4th pesky plane in Pennsylvania.]
You really have to be careful with those things.
They could put an eye out!
:0)
BTW just finished a great novel about TWA 800. Nelson DeMille's "Night Fall"
One (1) tactical theater air defense system.
I was a good boy this year, and not rude at all.

Ah, the good old ACME bottle rocket. That darn Coyote!
The TWA 800 explosion occurred the weekend that the Lewinsky scandal was surfacing ... Hmmmmmmmm.

LOL.

Don't worry about it. Probably Clinton fighting the war on terror. That rascal Osama parachuted to safety...requiring subsequent strikes at camel tents and aspirin factories during the impeachment proceedings.
LOL! Isn't he running a diploma-mill now? Giving out Ph.D.'s in internet research... :0)
