Some New Orleans Students Happy Elsewhere

Stephanie Swisher is settling in nicely as a freshman at the University of Virginia, enjoying classes, Naval ROTC, club volleyball and football Saturdays. Things are going so well, in fact, that she would rather not return to Tulane University in New Orleans -- the school she had expected to attend until Hurricane Katrina struck. "The argument that everyone's giving me is that I'm a freshman so I've never known Tulane, I need to give it a chance,'" she said. "My argument is, why should I have to?" But Swisher probably will have to give Tulane a chance. Despite her wishes -- and a 600-signature petition she helped organize -- Virginia is sticking by the conditions under which visiting students were admitted after the hurricane: they must return when their school reopens. And Tulane is scheduled to reopen Jan. 17. After Katrina, colleges around the country took in an estimated 18,000 displaced New Orleans students. Now, the New Orleans schools desperately need those students to return next semester and pay tuition.

So why doesnt she just apply and then enroll at UVA. She can get in there if she can get into Tulane.

Of course, students won't truly be forced to return; host colleges can simply refuse to let them transfer there next semester. But there's nothing to prevent students from withdrawing from their New Orleans schools and trying to transfer next fall like anyone else.

Speaking as a parent of a student who considered Tulane, They want a lot there, as much as the Ivy league schools, and they used to have a lot more to offer. What is left of New Orleans? OK, I know the French Quarter did not get hit badly, but so much will change and/or not be back to par for several years.

No mention in the article as to whether Tulane's staff all are returning, this could also lower the value of a Tulane education. So no wonder the school is in a snit. They are not worth the high cost anymore, and for a few years should give discounts to the kids attending. Why not?

Agree, however they will probably increase tuition, and blame the cuts made during the special session.

I could be mistaken, but I thought Tulane was far easier to get into than UVA.

ROTC? In the Democrat ruled NO she won't be invited back.

You might be right but i was always under the impression that Tulane has a pretty good reputation. The law school at Tulane is consistantly named one of the best in the country. Either way, she can still apply and she what happens. She doesnt have to go to Tulane.

Yes, I would apply to UVa immediately. Would be better to have a full year of courses....No one should be forced back to New Orleans.

There are a lot of medical facilities used for teaching in NO that may not be in the mix for the foreseeable future. Not sure how this will impact Tulane if at all.

So why doesnt she just apply and then enroll at UVA. She can get in there if she can get into Tulane.

Right now most colleges that have accepted displaced Tulane students charge only the tuition that Tulane would have charged and send the money to Tulane (I know the University of Washington does that).

Now consider if you as a student decided to apply at UVA. You are an out of state student and therefore do get resident tuition. College costs increase by $10 - $15 thousand per year. To many students, this makes it infeasable. In fact it was that way for me (being that I originally come from Montana and there were no decent schools in state for my goals). I joined the military and achieved state residency at my final duty station so that I can now pay in state tuition.

My son considered Tulane years ago. My husband would have none of it! NO WAY. NO HOW!

Much too much of a culture gap, in his opinion.

She probably doesn't want to deal with hurricane season again.

Well, they hid some of the political gap, but our son went to Auburn and it was no compairson. A very good education at about one third the price. And better football, War Eagle. Plus this is his senior year and he has noted that it would be a big mess trying to finish at another institution, or making a delayed graduation. No fun for any of the Tulane kids, no fun at any grade.

There were some girls from NYC who enrolled at Tulane. One wonders just what their parents were thinking.

New Orleans is a hell hole with very little going for it as far as safety is concerned.

That would add insult to injury. I believe the tuition for these top private schools is set by supply and demand because they all seem to top out about the same. But I would suspect the applications for Tulane dropped way off this fall.
