N.M. Gov Admits He Wasn't Baseball Pick

Gov. Bill Richardson is coming clean on his draft record — the baseball draft, that is, admitting that his claim to have been a pick of the Kansas City A's in 1966 was untrue.

For nearly four decades, Richardson, often mentioned as a possible Democratic presidential candidate, has maintained he was drafted by the Kansas City Athletics.

The claim was included in a brief biography released when Richardson successfully ran for Congress in 1982. A White House news release in 1997 mentioned it when he was about to be named U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. And several news organizations, including The Associated Press, have reported it as fact over the years.

But an investigation by the Albuquerque Journal found no record of Richardson being drafted by the A's, who have since moved to Oakland, or any other team.

Informed by the newspaper of its findings, the governor acknowledged the error in a story in Thursday's editions.

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter ... I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's," he said.

Richardson spokesman Gilbert Gallegos declined to comment when reached by the AP on Thursday.

Richardson, a right-handed pitcher who played at Tufts University, said he was actively scouted by several major league teams in the 1960s.

He insisted his name appeared on "a draft list of some kind" created by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He named team scouts, whom he said told him that he "would or could" be drafted. The scouts have since died.

Richardson later developed arm trouble, eliminating any possible pro career.

If he wanted to, he could get the nomination from Hillary. Really. I think he will have to sumo wrestle Evan Bayh, but he wants that VP slot.

He doesn't.

He has be trashing her pretty badly in his fundraisers.

After awhile, you knew she was going to get ticked off.

I got ejected from the Cotton Bowl near the end of halftime of a Cowboys / Chiefs game in 1972.

Took six people to do it.

Televised.

All my relatives saw it on TV when I was supposed to be somewhere else - 500 miles away.

"After being notified of the situation and after researching the matter ... I came to the conclusion that I was not drafted by the A's," he said.

Had he been drafted, he would have presumably been offered a contract. You'd think he could remember that, even with a Democrat's selective memory.

I guess he'd best watch his six since Hilary's opposition research will smite him.

You might laugh, but her opposition research team is a bunch of just graduated college kids.

Seriously.

She is depending on the media for her help.

At a recent party I went to, the chairman of the borough democratic party was telling me that her staff is a joke, everyone got their job through someone they knew, and some of her people were basically college kids to naive to have a clue.

He didn't realize I was a republican until he told he could get me a job in her office.

Her staff is a bunch of idiots who will take any idiot who has a friend already on her staff.

Even funnier, most of Bill Clintons operatives have since gone on to work for other politicians, so she can't get back most of his old team.....Bill Richardson used to be one of Clintons guys.

Bill are you getting tips from John Kerry now?

No, Kerry would still insist he has the memory seared in.

He's Bill. Maybe he was drafted by the Kansas City Bills.

This cant be true, Dan Rather has a copy of the 1966 letter from the A's. It was a very well preserved Microsoft word document

Here's the Scenerio:

1) He admits he's been lying for 40 years..
2) The press says it is an "Honest mistake"
3) He is a Democrat, so he must be telling the truth about lying.
4) This makes him presidential material.. and will step up if Hillary does not run or he will run as her vice-president canidate.
5) He was a Clinton Stooge and as such he has full qualifications to lead this nation.

Whenever a friend or family member asks why I am not a Democrat, I tell them that I do not like to lie to support my position.

Big deal! I once hit a home run off a pitcher that was once almost drafted.

Nixon stopped the draft just before his year came up.{p.s...it might have just been a double}

I registered for the draft in '86 and then figured I better volunteer before they called me up.

In all seriousness, Richardson would be great to run against in 2008. As governor he will have to explain why New Mexico ranks last in public school funding and any other stats people dig up on New Mexico. He will be vulnerable on the illegal immigration where taking a centrist position (fenceriding clintonista) will get him attacked from both sides.

Running for President requires convincing voters that you have the ability to conduct foreign policy. He has distinguished himself by being a key player in all the failed handout programs to North Korea. Even his Democratic opponents will be firing away at that.

Of course Clinton winning two terms totally disproves everything I just said.

If you were drafted by a professional sports team, believe me, you would remember that day for the rest of your life.

A hundred years or so ago a scout who was rumored to have discovered Johnny Bench came to my back-water, West Texas town checking out the local high school catcher. He'd made All-State his freshman year and was battling .487 and whacking homeruns with the Big Boys with only two games to go in his sophomore year. The kid had power and everyone told him defense could be taught. The scout was impressed as hell . . . then discovered the kid was only a sophomore.

The scout promised to come back and check on the kid.

Well . . . his junior year opposing pitchers discovered the kid couldn't hit a curve or slider to save his life. His senior year the wily and mean-spirited pitchers feasted on serving up nothing but curves and sliders.

Throw the kid a fastball of ANY velocity and he'd smack at least one out of two for a clean base hit . . . and more than normal would end up being monstrous homeruns.

But throw him the most horrible curve in the world . . . and he'd flail at it for days and never so much as dent his bat.

But, hey, a scout DID talk to me once for about five minutes . . . LOL . . . and you're right . . . I'll never forget it.

Unlike Bill Richardson, I never claimed I was drafted . . . but I did get paid $25 for a slow-pitch softball game one time. I always could hit them "straight" balls. But put a little "wiggle" on that sucker and I couldn't come within three feet of it.

You're right . . . Bill Richardson is lying out his teeth.

Well, it would be too good to believe if they will fight each other in a primary. Richardson is so much more like Bill in his sliminess. And Monica's pimp knows where some of Hillary's bodies are buried.

Look at Warner.

All of his money speeches sound like something you would find on Free Republic when he talks about Hillary.

If he doesn't personally hate her, he deserves an Oscar for making it seem to.

He also raised good money ripping her to other democrats, his talking points are that if she gets nominated she is going to lose like McGovern.

The money wing of the party loves it which really surprises me.
