I will be receiving my Christmas bonus in about two weeks. In keeping with the Jewish requirement of donating 10% of my income to charity, I'm now in the market for some good place to give to.
I'd like to give to a charity focusing on the truly poor -- those people unfortunate enough to live in destitute countries -- and one that focuses on developing poor economies (i.e. providing clean drinking water, educating people on modern farming methods, microcredit, fighting malaria with DDT) rather than simply giving handouts.
Note: I will not give to an organization that tries to promote Christianity (or Islam for that matter). I love and respect what good-hearted Christians can do, but as a Jew I simply will not aid Christian missionizing with my money.
Any suggestions?
I've heard of them, but quite frankly, I think their mission is too narrow. Most of the really poor people in the world ain't Jews, but they deserve clean water, basic sanitation and access to the engines of economic growth just as much as we do. Plus, even in poor countries, the Jews tend to be relatively well-off.
huh?
Having traveled in Africa,I can attest to the fact that it meets the requirements you've set forth.
On occasion,I give to Catholic Relief Services because they're active there.Don't know for sure if there's any "preaching" that goes with their relief work...buy it seems likely that there is.
I salute you in what you're planning to do.There can be no doubt that God smiles upon acts like yours.
Why not give to agencies that are supported by a certain well-known Jewish carpenter?
Okay, I'll bite. What do you have against Christian charitable organizations?
OFF TOPIC: I'm sorry, this is not responsive to your request, and I know you're not looking for a Christian charity to give to. But for anyone out there who is, Christian Children's Fund has a variety of programs that do at least some of the sorts of things that CH is looking for. They do a lot more than just the child sponsorships that they're well-known for; they also work very hard at trying to develop self-sufficiency for poor families. A very worthy outfit, in my opinion. Brave people, too. They go in harm's way in various countries that have armed conflicts, to help the refugees.
Thanks for the post, CH, and I hope you find exactly what you're looking for. It's most admirable that you give 10% of your money to charity.
Well, feel free to adopt my criteria -- unless you can think of a more worthy cause (in which case, feel free to tell me!)
I know this doesn't fit your needs, sorry, but I like to give to Saint Judes Childrens Research Hospital.
Undertandable. Then take my second suggestion and find someone and give them direct assistance.
On the Salvation Army, I never looked at them in religious terms although I suppose they are that. I just see the good they do, hear from the people they have helped.
They are tops.
Why focus somewhere else? A lot of good can be done right here.

IT has a rating system that is clearly defined.
By the way...popular Jewish Talk SHow host Michael Medved touts this charity as a good one!
The Eastforker Gambling Fund for the Criminaly Insane, not Christian but I believe in the support of the American Indian. As Mel Brooks said Jeez, He's darker than us!We have to protect our phony baloney jobs gentlemen!
We sent some money to that group and to Mercy Corps after the tsunami. After we received some material later from Mercy Corps that dissed President Bush, we ditched them and concentrated on CRS.
