The Rape of the Sabine Women is a mythological event from just after the founding of Rome. Or on the other hand they could be a large, young, violent underclass with a cult of machismo who having been born in Europe and raised on the streets don't really know or care that much about what anyone else thinks. Kind of like the situation here in the US.
