Spanish police have arrested 10 people suspected of setting up a support network for an Algerian Islamic extremist group linked to al Qaeda.

Officials believe the group was involved in activities such as drug trafficking and credit card fraud, rather than planning an attack.

The arrests followed a police investigation into connections between the group and Algerians in other European countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Britain, Belgium and Denmark.

Police arrested seven of the suspects in the province of Alicante, two in Grenada and one in Murcia province, seizing computers, drugs and documents.

Interior Minister Jose Antonio Alonso confirmed: "There is nothing to suggest that the dismantled group was going to carry out an attack in the short or medium term."

He added that, at this stage, the arrests were not linked to the March 2004 train bombings in Madrid, which killed 191 people.

According to the Spanish interior ministry, police investigating the train bombings have arrested 63 terrorist suspects since the beginning of the year.

Spain pulled out of the coalition fighting in Iraq!

They made efforts to appease the Arabs!

This cannot be!

Algeria and Morocco have their fingers in jihadi pies throughout Europe. Somehow they seem to escape official notice, though. Or at any rate, no one ever calls these countries to account, even though in the case of Morocco, there is some indication that the Moroccan government is aware of the activity conducted by its nationals abroad and possibly even coordinated by other islamists in Morocco. And Algeria has long been famous for its terrorist training camps, etc.

FYI
Nov 23 2002 An Algerian militant group suspected of links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida killed nine soldiers in violent clashes east of Algiers. Four police officers were killed 2 days earlier in Bourmedes.

As for Algeria. you do of couse know that the Algerian government has been fighting a very nasty war against Islamic terror for quite some time now.

While I undertsand the sarcasm behind that statement, consider, now that Spain has "capitulated", what better place to base a group that is to attack outside of Spain (say UK, Italy, etc...). Decent infrasturcture, supportive population, open borders to the EU . . .

I'm aware that Algeria has been fighting, but it's like Pakistan in that respect - however, it doesn't get the same treatment that Pakistan does, either in the sense of strong support or strong negative action against its exported terrorists. Neither does Morocco - every so often, the American (and sometimes the Spanish) government put pressure on Morocco, and they have a very visible bust, but these are mostly arrests of people who want to overthrow the current king. Granted, most of them are jihadists, too.

Making kissy-face with terrorists does not make them love you.
They hate you because of their ideology. Their religion, for those of you in Noo Orlins.
France and Spain tried to make nice with people who hate Christian civilization. It failed.
Lesson for USA here.
