NOVEMBER 22--In a sweetheart plea deal, a former Florida middle school teacher who had sex with a 14-year-old male student escaped a jail term today. Debra Lafave, 24, pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior and was sentenced to three years of community control, or house arrest, and ordered to register as a sex offender. Lafave's plea came on the eve of trial and was approved by the teen victim and his family (in a court affidavit filed today, the boy's mother wrote that a trial would "negatively affect my son's emotional and psychological well-being"). Lafave, who will serve seven years probation following her house arrest term, was facing a maximum of 30 years in prison. A probable cause affidavit prepared by the Marion County Sheriff's Office details the predatory behavior (in her classroom, an Isuzu SUV, and her Tampa-area home) of Lafave, who is pictured below in police booking photos. A supplemental report from the Temple Terrace Police Department (which you can find here) included the boy's graphic account of his trysts last year with Lafave. The evidence of a loss of virginity is always expressed by a permanent change in the physicality of the female. A change in physicality is almost always associated with a psychological change (would any of the ladies on this thread like to refute this implication?). A fourteen-year-old is a minor, and is not generally viewed in the eyes of the law as a responsible party to consensual sex with a person having attained adulthood. As such, in a case like this, the adult male is legally responsible for the change in status from virgin to sexually experienced female. Is a 14-year-old girl psychologically prepared for this change in both her physical and psychological makeup?
Conversely, a 14-year-old male person experiences no obvious physical changes (unless the female is a carrier of an STD) when he loses his virginity to an adult female. His physicality remains constant and any psychological change is less pronounced as a result.
The adult male who has sex with a 14-year-old female runs the risk of getting her pregnant, in which case the minor female will be faced with a difficult decision: Carry the baby to term or have an abortion. Either decision will be life-altering in the extreme and the adult male will have been legally responsible for the state of affairs within which the young lady finds herself. The 14-year old male having sex with an adult female runs no such risk: The adult female may become pregnant as a result of her liason, but she will herself be responsible for the state of affairs.
These are my thoughts. I see the adult-male/teenaged female scenario as the more socially and morally egregious of the two circumstances, therefore I have little problem with any perceived inequity in justice administered between the two.
I do believe an adult female should be legally accountable when she lures a teenager into sexual activity.
I'm open to refutation and/or flaming.
At least she'll be paying taxes on the big money she'll be pulling in while on probation.
Many of the posts on this subject just affirms for me the nagging feelings I have about conservatives not being that different from liberals when it comes to issues of morality.

At 14 I was not the same person as today. All I said is she's quite attractive and at that age it wouldn't have taken much for her to have her way with me. Not once did I say that it would have been OK or right to do so.
