CNN SENIOR MANAGEMENT LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION OF CHENEY 'X'; CONTROL ROOM STAFFER 'LAUGHED' WHEN X FLASHED
CNN management has launched an internal investigation into how a giant black 'X' mark appeared over Vice President Dick Cheney's face -- as he delivered a speech from Washington on Monday!
"We are taking this matter very, very seriously, and I can assure you no one at this network would ever deliberately place an 'X' over the vice president's face," a top CNN source, who asked not to be named at this time, said from New York.
A well-placed CNN insider claims a control room staffer "laughed" when the image appeared shortly after 11 am.
A careful review of the tape now shows a white colored 'X' was also transposed over Cheney's face during the speech, it appeared for less than 1/15 of a second, creating a startling flash effect.
CNN spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg emails: "We concluded this was a technological malfunction not an issue of operator error. A portion of the switcher experienced a momentary glitch. We obviously regret that it happened and are working on the equipment to ensure it is not repeated."
A rival network news director asks: "When has an 'X' ever aired on CNN before? Who had the graphic sitting in the key signal? Who generated the 'X'?"
The vice president himself is said to have brushed off the incident, a White House source said early Tuesday morning.

I remember about 8 years ago when Slade Gorton was still our Republican senator, and he was involved in a controversy regarding protecting the spotted owl. One of the local liberal papers ran side-by-side pics on the front page, same sized pics, one labeled "Sen. Slade Gorton" and one labeled "Spotted Owl." Gorton had a thin, gaunt, owlish appearance, and there was no doubt in my mind that the pics were presented that way in order to mock Gorton.
You've got to be kidding.
Is that real?
He's wrong. It's already happend. Someone at CNN deliberately put in "X" over Cheney's face. How can this person "assure" us it wouldn't happen? These folks are nuts.
Yep, it's real. His name is Niger Innis. Of course since he's a conservative, the mistake was no big deal.
What? That a lame intern at CNN had never heard of Niger?
CXN!!! I love it!
I'd like to use it from now on, with your permission...;-D
We have a new savior:
Like Malcolm X, only for older white guys with heart disease |
LOL, Laz!
When the X ballcap craze was on, so long ago, I got myself a U of Virginia cap, with the big V on it. When people would ask about it, I let them know that--like those people showing support for Malcolm the Tenth--I was showing support for my hero, the Christian warrior-king Henry V. Was priceless to see the libs' reactions. :-)
I'm familiar with Niger Innis and have enjoyed watching him on Hannity and Combs several times. But, dang, I never saw that before.
I noticed after the first X (the only one I have seen so far), that the text under Cheney changed to another quote. That told me the X might somehow be related to the transition. With the additional data of the text saying "transition begins after 5 frames of black", I'm thinking that someone had programmed the transition and didn't set the right key color, or forgot to turn keying on. In video speak, that means they didn't set the color of the background, in this case the X and the extra text, to be invisible when the signal went to the program side.
Screw up? Possibly. Someone getting caught playing around? Most likely. I remember early, early in my career editing video of a guy who had run in and put a coat and tie on over bicycle shorts and sat down at a desk, so the shorts couldn't be seen. As a joke for myself, I typed in "I'm not wearing any pants" on the screen, fully intending to make it go away before we ran the master tape.
Well, that didn't happen. At least we can laugh about it now, and it was not malicious.
That's my reason for thinking someone was screwing around and then screwed up. He should be busted to making coffee for the guys who don't screw up as often.
You've been framed, ping!
"I don't think so..... And what was the text underneath the X that was obliterating Cheney's comments?"
Even more interesting is the text that was still readable -
CHENEY: "I DO NOT BELIEVE
Someone used a default mode of a character generator, keyed it into the signal, and inserted it into the on-air signal, after sizing the output to make the image they wanted. Because it was a default mode (though resized) they could claim plausible deniability.
This was no accident, it was devious and intentional.
It was an "X" in the most metaphoric sense and should not be taken out of context.
Mary Mapes working for CNN?
`Cheney X'-----That's great!
Who's the cat that won't cop out,
when there's danger all about:

They threw out that old canard again last night in a big hurry.
ROTFLMAO BUMP! It was the other HAL9000. They all look alike to me. :>)!
Did they REALLY do that?
It's a full-time job just delineating fact from fiction in trying to keep up...
When in black, you cant tell htat it's text at the bottom by the CNN logo, but in white, you can see that they also had a text "malfunction". Anyone know what that says down there?
