Summer Soldiers
NY Sun ^ | 11/21/05 | JOHN O'NEILL

Senator Kerry, supposedly defending Rep. John Murtha, said, "I won't stand for the Swift-Boating of Jack Murtha!" As one of the 254 members of Mr. Kerry's unit in Vietnam who belonged to Swift Boat Veterans and POWs for Truth, I found Mr. Kerry's comments most ironic.

To us, Mr. Kerry's comments meant that no one should do to Mr. Murtha that which Mr. Kerry did to all of us and our fellow Vietnam veterans, living and dead. Mr. Kerry's disgraceful comments on many occasions in 1971 (while we were locked in combat), claiming falsely that we were "murdering" hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese and committing rape and mayhem on a daily basis, are a part of the public record for which he has never apologized. This might be called "Kerrying" our soldiers.

In his own strange way, in his recent comments, Mr. Kerry was trying by implication to compare himself to Mr. Murtha - the gravest of insults to Mr. Murtha, who was given a standing ovation by the House of Representatives (which then properly buried his immediate pullout suggestion 403-3). Mr. Murtha's long military record stands in stark contrast with Mr. Kerry's continuous self-promotion of his short and controversial service in our unit. More importantly, Mr. Murtha has never compared our troops in the field - now or then - to the "Army of Genghis Khan" or claimed our adversaries, whether the bloody communists and Khmer Rouge or the butchers of Al Qaeda, were simply democratic reformers. Can anyone - even in the cocoon of Washington or the incestuous world of Mainstream Media - imagine either side of the aisle spontaneously rising to clap for anything that Mr. Kerry ever did or said?

Our nation and our soldiers, who have shown their courage, decency, and worth in desperate fighting on dozens of battlefields, deserve our support for their mission and themselves. They deserve infinitely more than summer soldiers, sunshine patriots, and armchair Napoleons, whose determination and purpose melts with the first winter storm.

Murtha didn't even have the balls to vote for what he was so ardently flapping his yap about. After saying over and over again we should withdraw from Iraq immediately, he couldn't even VOTE for his own course of action.

Respect is something you earn every day. It's not some status you're automatically accorded because of your past. He (and the Rats) lost any claim to Americans' respect when he maligned our war effort and then didn't have the cojones to back his own preferred course of action. Blatant hypocrites, all.

Murtha has become the Dean Wormer of the House of Representatives. Where people might once have accorded him the title "Honorable" out of respect for his office, he will be forever hounded by sneezing that sounds like "Bu!!sh1t" and "E@t Me."

Even when they use the term "respected" in the same sentence with "Murtha," it will sound as if they are describing something loathsome stuck to the bottom of their shoe.

Yes....I can appreciate that John O'Neill is trying to distinguish Murtha from that treasonous idiot Kerry, but Murtha doesn't automatically get acclaim from THIS generation...

He is trying to make it possible that my two granddaughters are either killed for being Christian...or wearing burqas when they grow up.

I don't respect ANYONE that puts party over country.

I respect Murtha's military service, I just believe he is acting stupid and is being used.

I met Mr O'Neill last year. What a modest man who accomplished so much for this country.

O'Neill is so typical of our Viet Nam era veterans. Quiet heroes who did their duty then came home expecting no glory (and boy, they sure got very little). They then picked up their lives where they had left off and got on with good honorable lives.

I detest what John Kerry and the men & women like him did to try to sully these vets.

Laura Ingraham and others have been calling Democrats "summer soldiers" and "sunshine patriots", using the words of Patrick Henry for those who fought for the revolution when things looked good, but who went home when things got tough. I think the analogy is inapt.

Democrats like Murtha and Reid and Kerry are Sunshine Traitors, not sunshine patriots. In other words, we are kicking ass in this war, winning the war in a matter of weeks and then slowly but steadily winning the peace. Things are going well, so what do Demorats do? They tear it down, make victory appear to be defeat, and with control of the propaganda mills, they get a few simple-minded folks to begin to believe their big lie.

However, the troops and those who do more than skim the headlines know better. We are winning, as they are screaming in their emails from the front. Because George Bush cannot be permitted to win a great victory, the perception that we are winning must be defeated. The only way to do that is to lie about the war, to diminish the accomplishments and magnify the setbacks.

To actively seek to harm the war effort makes one a traitor. That is what all Demorats are right now, with the exception of Lieberman. They are sunshine traitors--when their country is winning, they try to cause its defeat.

I've heard (from a somewhat reliable source), that Murtha is the target of an ethics investigation. If that's true, then his criticism of the war was just a smokescreen, an effort to build some goodwill among his liberal allies before the inquiry goes public--and allowing him to paint the investigation as a GOP "smear."

Look, the Dems have already moved beyond Murtha into mounting a full blown demand that the "Iraqis come to understand they've got to defend themselves".

They did this for Viet Nam, of course, but just before they trotted that one out they demanded the Vietnamese change their draft age from 21 to 18. They couldn't complain about the draft age this time because, alas, we don't have a draft, and Charley Rangel's effort to get one failed.

It's pretty clear that Nancy Pelosi and her running dog lackeys in the Democratic party have in mind a grand finale that will have a million Iraqi Shi'ites setting sail into small boats out into the Gulf where half will drown.

Their thirst for human blood is never slaked!

Sadly, we don't have a republican leadership with the insight or cajones to explain things as you just did.

The swiftboat veterans, by definition, were all Vietnam combat veterans. Every one of them had whatever combat claim to fame Kerry sought for himself. More, in fact, because they served in Vietnam longer than his abbreviated tour. But we live in a leftist infected world where these combat veterans are used like a dirty word.

Think about it, Kerry is a swift boat vet, he says that is his badge of honor, yet he is now permitted to use "swiftboat" as an insult. Sick times indeed.

The only analogy of Iraq to Vietnam that works is the one the Democrats are bent on creating, turning a win into a defeat, precipitously withdrawing causing untold harm to those who have relied on us and shame to our country and soldiers.

I sometimes think the whole concept of "exit strategy," born in Vietnam, should be deep sixed. What was the exit strategy in WW2? The term implies inability to succeed or complete the job.
