CAMDEN, N.J., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- City officials in Camden, N.J., are taking the offensive against a Kansas statistical firm that ranks Camden as the most dangerous city in the United States.
Monday, the Morgan Quitno firm released its annual ranking of dangerous cities based on six types of crime, and for the second year, Camden was first in the country among 354 cities.
The study analyzed the occurrence rates of murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theft.
However, local officials told the Camden Courier-Post the latest rankings use figures from 2004, and overlook improvements made in 2005.
"Last year is old news. The ranking is not an appropriate measure of where we stand today," said Camden County Prosecutor Vincent Sarubbi.
Camden Chief Operating Officer Randy Primas said the Marriott hotel chain backed out of plans to build a hotel downtown after last year's ranking was announced.
I think their last mayor or city manager is under indictment for some kind of graft, too -- just in case anyone had any illusions about Camden.
Gary, Indiana, Gary Indiana, Gary, Indiana,
Let me say it once again.
Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana, Gary, Indiana,
That's the town that "knew me when."
If you'd like to have a logical explanation
How I happened on this elegant syncopation,
I will say without a moment of hesitation
There is just one place
That can light my face.
Gary, Indiana,
Gary Indiana,
Not Louisiana, Paris, France, New York, or Rome,
but Gary, Indiana,
Gary, Indiana,
Gary Indiana,
My home sweet home.
I think you can put New Orleans now as one of the safest cities in America.
There are parts of Newark that have undergone a similar "renaissaince" over that period of time.
That's pretty funny.
LOL....I guess that was a wrong choice of words.
The Camden aquarium is actually quite nice.....pity it is located on the other side of Philly.
The rest of Camden is poor and luckily small, you can be out of Camden and into perfectly nice surrounding communities in a matter of minutes.
I guess you want the New Jersey docked off New York or San Francisco? Even putting aside the fact that it's the New Jersey, do you really prefer those anti-military cities?
Didn't they close the Camden aquarium when the moose ran away?
Hmm, something is similar about the crime-ridden cities...can't quite put my finger on it...
Camden's incidences of murder, rape, aggravated assault, robbery, burglary and motor vehicle theft are all metaphorical and should not be taken out of context.
On the one hand, a 40% reduction in crime is very significant, especially if this occurs in temporal association with major overhauls in law enforcement (since that suggests that there is a substantial reason for the reduction, not just a fluke). On the other hand, such bounces are not rare, and impartiality requires a "just the facts" sort of approach to such rankings since they AREN'T rare; if they aren't outliers, who is to say when an asterisk is deserved?
So, no, I don't think an asterisk is reasonable. On the other hand, I do believe that Morgan Quitno might have noted the reduction in crime in subsequent press dealings: The news stories are obviously going to look at a declaration that "Trenton, NJ repeats as most dangerous" as a lede, and if it's a misleading lede, Morgan Quitno can prevent that misinformation.
>> Didn't they close the Camden aquarium when the moose ran away? <<
It didn't run away; they claimed insufficient funds and they let it loose. Talk about reckless behavior from government officials; Hungry moose can be dangerous! My sister is contemplating a lawsuit.
