Coupon Misprints Could Cost Casino Millions

JOLIET, Ill. -- A misprint may end up costing an Illinois casino millions of dollars.

Harrah's Joliet Casino said there was a mistake in about 11,000 coupons mailed to customers last week. Instead of being worth $15 or $20 apiece, each had a face value of $525 in cash. The company blames the error on a third-party vendor.

Dozens of gamblers crowded Harrah's customer service desk on Friday, and got angry when the casino refused to redeem the coupons. Customers were encouraged to trade the coupons for reward points. Some did, but others decided to keep their slips of paper.

The Illinois Gaming Board ruled that Harrah's must honor the coupons. All told, the company could be liable for as much as $5.8 million.

Unless the casino owned the printer's business, they are not usually held liable for a printing error.

That could get overturned IMO.

Why? You don't think the casinos make enough money off you?

Now if the printer showed the court the original copy it printed from and that had the mistake and the casino provided the material, then they are liable.

The casio should have looked at the printing before it was mailed unless it was mailed from the printer's place.

Also, usually a printer has signed off on approval of the copy printed.

Could be more happening than we know.

Ooops.... that on top of the cost of free drinks. Its hard to see how they stay in business if they give everything away for free.

Hope the printer had the casino approve the print proof before hand or else they better have liability insurance.

Trust me - no casino has ever given anything away for free. You may win or lose each time you gamble - but in the long run, the house always wins.

$5.8 million is not even a ripple in Harrah's deep pond. They should have just honored the misprinted coupons and taken the good PR in the first place.

casinos in illinois are nothing more than revenue generators for the state. They will not rule in favor of them unless the state sees it cutting into their share of the take.

The supermarket where I shop just did away with coupons. I'm so happy. No more painful waiting for painfully slow counting out of coupons, and scanning them in, once, no that failed, twice, three times, four times, oh the fifth time worked, ok now let's see what we have here, a coupon that saves 15 cents on a bucket of sugar slop cereal, let me see if we can scan that coupon in, but wait, this coupon's upside down, but that's ok, we've only been at this for half an hour and there's only 40 people in line behind you. We'll work our way through it, no problem.

Oh yeah. Paper coupons are a bitch. I'm so glad to see they're causing the coupon-creators some problems too.

I had a friend who worked in a vegas casino, and she said down in the basement they have big oxygen concentrating machines that pump pure oxygen into the casinos to keep everyone awake and perky! Isn't that funny? So they pass out free drinks, and hop us up on o2. True story.

I am unsure if this applies here, but here in Illinois if you pick up a bottle of soap at Wal Mart and it is labeled 3 bucks or a drill at Sears with the price marked 25 bucks, when the actual prices are supposed to be 5 bucks and 75 bucks respectively, you pay the price marked on it regardless what it is supposed to be. Its a fraud thing.

My call is that they will have to pay what the coupons said.

If they are like the casinos here in AZ the drinks arent free and they are overpriced.

Whether casinos serve "free" drinks depends on state law. For example, Arizona and Illinois don't allow casinos to serve free alcoholic beverages. Nevada does. The "free" drinks aren't really free - they cloud many player's judgment and cause them to play longer, giving the house additional edge.

There's no such thing as a free drink.

So they didn't have anyone check out the coupons before they were sent out??? I believe you are wrong about them getting stuck with it. Not too smart in my opinion. Someone is going to get fired over this.
