Al Qaida Nabbed Near Mexican Border
NewsMax ^ | 11/20/05 | NewsMax

An Al Qaida operative who was on the FBI's terrorist watch list was recently captured near the Mexican border, housed in a Texas jail and turned over to federal agents, Rep. John Culberson, R-Texas, said on Friday.

"A confirmed al Qaida terrorist, an Iraqi national, was held in the Brewster County jail," Rep. Culberson told ABC Radio host Sean Hannity. "He was captured in Mexico. This was within the last six weeks. He was turned over to the FBI."

The Texas Republican said he obtained the stunning information about the terrorist's capture "from the sheriffs who were directly involved.

"In fact, one was the sheriff' who incarcerated him in the Brewster County jail [and who]confirmed this as well," he explained. The same sheriff also confirmed "that this guy is on the FBI's al Qaida list," he added.

The al Qaida operative "had been in Mexico, living just about 60 miles east of El Paso," Rep. Culberson said. "He was captured in a little town called El Porvenir, right across from Fort Hancock."

Rep. Culberson said the detainee had been living in Mexico for up to a year, where the terrorist "was taking careful notes on the movement of people, police officers, wildlife etc. "

The Iraqi national "had apparently aggravated a neighbor in Mexico, who turned him into Mexican authorities," he explained. Mexican officials then turned him over to the U.S. officials, who temporarily housed him in the Brewster County jail.

Asked why this news hadn't been reported earlier, Culberson told Hannity: "That's a very good question and one that I intend to get to the bottom of in my subcommittee."

Rep. Culberson sits on the appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction over the FBI and the Department of Justice. "I guarantee that we're going to get to the bottom of this," he pledged.

He said FBI Director Robert Mueller had previously "confirmed" in testimony before his committee "that there are individuals from countries with known al Qaida connections who are changing their Islamic surnames to Hispanic-sounding names and obtaining false Hispanic identities, learning to speak Spanish and pretending to be Hispanic immigrants."

"And these are clearly Arab terrorists," Rep. Culberson added, "from countries like Yemen, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. They're crossing the border, pretending to be Hispanic immigrants, and then disappearing."

Rep. Culberson said news of al Qaida's penetration of the U.S.'s southern border has him worried that the next terrorist plot could involve setting off simultaneous truck bombs in major urban centers.

"The day they blow us up," he predicted, "the border will be sealed tighter than the Berlin Wall and you'll have armed United States' military forces" enforcing immigration laws.

EXPLODED: 22 Myths About the War on Terror that Osama bin Laden Hopes You'll Believe
National Review Book Service ^ | 2005 | Richard Miniter
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1513719/posts

Turn on the TV at any given moment, and you're likely to see some earnest media "expert" telling you confidently that America faces a serious threat from suitcase nukes, that Al-Qaeda terrorists are streaming across the Mexican border, that there was no link between Al-Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, and that Iraq is another Vietnam. There's just one problem with all this: none of it is true. Richard Miniter explains why these and other popular media factoids and urban legends are not only wrong, but severely damaging to our war effort, in Disinformation: The 22 Media Myths That Undermine the War on Terror.........

So far, only a handful of states have been swamped, so the border is foreign to them. The White House is for open borders, so they ignore the consequences. I'm sure the WH
wanted this covered up as well, but it got out.

closing the borders is about a lot more than keeping out Mexicans "who will take the jobs Americans don't want."

Yup. Of course, no one in America knew how to mow grass or scrub a toilette until 30 million mexicans invaded our country. We never trimmed our hedges either. Didn't flip any burgers and there certainly were no concrete workers or carpenters prior to the invasion. No sir. That never existed in this nation until about 10 years ago... < /tard >

Your more than welcome. I consider it to be necessary to day to day living, similar to taking out the garbage, cutting the grass and changing the oil in your car.

Another two or three terrorist attacks should do it.AWB

You should start an office pool. I think one more September 11-type attack would do the trick, but you may be right if the attacks were "smaller" with limited damage/deaths. I have also thought that since Al Qaeda must be reading the (doctored) opinion polls on Iraq, they might be more interested in striking "infrastructure" targets, rather than people per se. This would produce feelings of insecurity, give the Leftists something to crow about, but would not risk violating Napoleon's dictum to "never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake", by inflicting the kinds of civilian casualties that might unite the American people behind President Bush.

Sure we will. Somebody from the Administration will swing by to have "The Talk" with Culberson and we'll never hear another word about this.

RE: another September 11 attack. Next time, it may be a cruise ship with 3,000 passengers and 1500 crew. Those things have as many holes in them, security-wise, as a sieve.

I watched the extremely corny "Poseidon Adventure" last night, and it was very melodramatic. Nevertheless, they showed accurately how easy it would be for Al Quaeda to get their agents in place on a cruise ship.

Terrorism coming soon to America? Farah reveals Hezbollah preparing incursions near Mexican border

We've all heard and read the reports recently about how the Mexican government is actively promoting illegal migration into the United States – even providing survival kits to those intending to cross the Rio Grande and make their way to the "promised land."

Mexico makes little or no effort to police its border with the U.S. It minimizes the threat the refugees pose to the United States. It even suggests its overflow population should be welcomed into the U.S.

Therefore, a recent news item originating in the San Diego Union-Tribune was something of a shocker for several reasons.

Mexico's National Security Adviser Adolfo Aguilar Zinser made the sensational announcement that Islamic terrorist organizations have a presence along the U.S. border and may be making contacts with Mexican guerrilla groups.

"We have evidence that organizations or people linked to Islamic organizations could have a presence here or be passing through," Zinser told a local radio program. Though declining to identify the specific groups, he also said the groups could have indigenous guerrilla ties.

The announcement was not intended to alarm U.S. authorities, but rather to quell fears in Mexico about the possibility of guerrilla attacks.

"Our duty is to find them and send [them] away from the country so they don't put roots down here or try to use our territory as a haven," he explained.

While Zinser wouldn't name names, the newspaper El Universal and other Mexican dailies did. They said the Islamic militants trying to form a base of operations in Mexico are tied to Hezbollah, the Syrian and Iranian-backed terrorists who established a base in Lebanon and have used it ever since to launch rocket and guerrilla attacks on Israel's northern border.

And, despite the reassuring words of Zinser, the Mexican media reports make clear the true purpose of the Islamic terrorists in the country – to carry out guerrilla activities in the United States. But even Zinser acknowledged the potential threat to the U.S.

"The geographical proximity with the United States puts us on alert so that we are not the passing-through point for any of these organizations," he said.

Because this report got little media attention in the United States – and next to none in areas far from the border – it is safe to say this is an issue not on the radar screen in Washington. But it's clear to me that the Islamic terrorists currently focusing their attention on destroying Israel are taking their fight to what they consider the ultimate enemy – "the Great Satan" of the United States.

Let me tell you, folks, this is not an enemy the U.S. Border Patrol can handle.

There's been debate in a few circles lately about whether it's time to use the U.S. military to stem the flow of illegal immigration into the U.S. from south of the border. I've never been one to suggest the U.S. military needs more deployments. It is already vastly over-deployed. And there is always a civil liberties threat when the U.S. military deploys on domestic soil.

But the one true objective of the U.S. military – the one defined by the U.S. Constitution – is to defend the borders of the country.

Personally, I think this is a much more sensible deployment than those in Macedonia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Haiti and dozens of other remote places the U.S. acts as policeman of the world.

Meanwhile, as our troops patrol borders in these and other countries, our own borders are as porous as a sieve.

The illegal immigration into the United States in recent years has had devastating effects on the infrastructure of our country. It has been a demoralizing factor for millions of Americans – especially those who live closest to the problems.

But all that is nothing compared to the horror and anguish that Americans will experience when the first truck bomber makes it across the border and delivers his load at a vulnerable U.S. target. It's nothing compared to the terror Americans will experience when the first airliner is blown out of the sky by hand-held, guided, American-made Stinger missiles from south of the border – or north. It's nothing compared to the anger Americans will experience when Katyusha rockets start hitting American cities the way they routinely hit Israeli towns in Galilee.

Sound far-fetched? With so little attention on Mexico, it could well become America's Lebanon.

Mexico, where authorities combed through hotel registration documents and traced the activities of an "unusually high" number of Arab guests who stayed at Pacific coast resorts between July and five days before the terrorist attacks.

Somehow I can't ever see this happening as long as Bush dances to Vincente Fox's tune.

I'm convinced that Bush will continue to dance to Vicente's tune until he's no longer in office. Five years of unlimited illegal immigration from Mexico and the mess it's bringing to America hasn't caused Bush to skip a beat in his globalist/open borders plans.
