Bret Baier just had on Col. Hunt, and Col. Nash...they both said that probably by the end of next year...we should be down to between 50,000 and 100,000 troops with 3 major bases in Iraq..

BOTH seemed very pleased with what the House vote...although Nash also praised the vote on the Warner Amendment..which I don't agree with.

Johnnie, I know you are busy going over the thread...but it just hit me, that I don't remember reading any discussion on this thread about Rummy's remarks about Able Danger...

He said that the Pentgon has NOT found any evidence of their fore-knowledge of Mohammed Atta....but, he also said that doesn't mean it didn't exist...just that they can't find it.

Peach did bring it up but we got side tracked, I made note to ask her what was said but did not find it until I got to the bottom of all my notes. Thanks for the reminder. Rummy is often portrayed as the villain locking up all the Able Danger info. Good he is out telling people what is going on. Rummy is good people. One of the reason the knives are out for him is because he is taking on the old guard. All the old WW2 warfare style Generals hates his guts cause he trying to force the military to evolve.

Believe it or not, there are still a LOT of pols and Generals and Think Tankers stuck in the Big Army/Heavy Armor Cold War mindset. Alot of the bile thrown at Rummy revolves around the fact that HE understand a BIGGER MILITARY does NOT mean necessarily BETTER military. Since an awful lot of fat defense contracts and spending rest on which "vision" the old guard "boots on the ground" pols HATE him from stripping aways a lot of big ticket projects and wanting to close down a lot of useless bases.

I quit watching Sunday morning talk in 2000 and have never missed those silly irrelevant programs since that time. So what am I missing: the same ol' same ol', mostly McCain all the time.

Yes...you are correct about why he has rubbed some people the wrong way.

O'Reilly has been calling for his firing for a couple of years, I think...but, then again, O'Reilly accused the Swift Boat Vets of being liars...so he doesn't count...LOL

Rummy also stressed that the Pentagon has never turned down any request from Iraq or Afghanistan for more troops. He said if some commander at some base is unhappy with the amount of troops he has..that is a matter of dispersal...not the amount that have been requested from the Pentagon..and that that needs to be handled between the ones running the war.

3 Dims and 3 Pugs in the Senate wrote a letter warning they would do an old-fashioned filibuster until the end of the season. Leahy told Specter he would oppose and that brought Specter to pull the conference.

Senators Say Votes Lacking for Patriot Act Accord - Nov 17 (Bloomberg)

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, is in talks with Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, the panel's senior Democrat, and other lawmakers to build support for the accord.

Specter and his House counterpart, Representative James Sensenbrenner, a Wisconsin Republican, are trying to seal an agreement so it can be approved by both chambers before lawmakers leave at the end of this week for the Thanksgiving recess.

``We're working on it,'' Specter said. When asked about Feingold's threat to filibuster, he joked, ``He's got strong lungs.''

Senator Richard Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat, said Republican congressional leaders shouldn't underestimate the opposition to the accord.

``I can just tell you for those who think we are going to leave here without incident they are overlooking the fact that this Patriot Act is a controversial measure,'' he said.

Durbin said he would support Feingold's efforts to block a vote on the agreement. He declined to say whether enough Democrats would support the effort to sustain a filibuster, which requires 60 votes to overcome.

Durbin, Feingold, Sununu and three other senators sent a letter to Specter, Leahy and Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts and Jay Rockefeller, the panel's senior Democrat, saying they would oppose the agreement unless ``significant'' changes were made.

Those changes include returning to the Senate's four-year sunsets of controversial provisions, including one for multiple wiretaps, and stronger judicial review of document requests. The agreement calls for seven-year sunsets on the provisions.

Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Larry Craig of Idaho and Democratic Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado also signed the letter.

Sal. Where did you go?

Thanks MNJohnnie. Real life is requiring time from cyber life right now so I'm going to be fairly limited for a couple months, but I'm not going away.

I wonder if Nash praised the Warner amendment because he felt like he had to? That just doesn't make sense to me either.

Sorry I fell asleep. Good finds there on Patriot Act renewal. I'm hoping we have a few more threads on it so we can urge people to call their senators.

Thanks.

I'm sure there will be. The Senate Coverage -- (November '05) thread has a couple of offhand comments.
