WCCC investigating controversial e-mail Adjunct instructors comments gain national attention
WASHINGTON TWP. (Nov. 18, 2005) Officials at Warren County Community College are investigating political comments about the war in Iraq made by an adjunct instructor to a student via an e-mail message.
Responding earlier this week to a students invitation to attend a student club event, John Daly, an adjunct instructor of Basic Writing and Developmental English, e-mailed the student with a host of his own personal beliefs. The student club event, sponsored by the Young Americans for Freedom, featured Iraq war veteran Lt. Col. Scott Rutter as a guest speaker.
WCCC President Dr. William Austin personally welcomed guests to the event, held on Thursday, and introduced Rebecca Beach, president and secretary of the newly formed club. Lt. Col. Rutters talk was well received, and deemed a success by attendees.
WCCC is further investigating Mr. Dalys conduct and his expression of views in the classroom and on campus.
Indeed, Mr. Dalys comments have caused much controversy on and off campus. Dr. Austin said, I personally find Mr. Dalys e-mail disgraceful and offensive, yet I must maintain that the college be a place for free expression, ideas, and open debate.
Dr. Austin added, We must remember that Mr. Daly is just one instructor out of many here. These are apparently his personal political views. He does not represent the colleges views, mission, and core values. We are a small community college and are here to serve the community and will continue to do so.
The college will continue to keep its pulse on this issue while maintaining its high standards of professionalism and integrity of all concerned, noted Dr. Austin.
WCCC Chairman of the Board, Ed Smith, said, We are fortunate to live in a world where so many brave men and women are willing to fight and die for our freedoms, including the right to express ones opinions.
Following is the text of the original article and John Daly's email:
College Professor to Student: Real Freedom will come when American Soldiers Murder Superiors Young Americas Foundation. ^ | Nov 17, 2005 | Young Americas Foundation.
HERNDON, VA Warren Community College English professor, John Daly, said that Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors. Rebecca Beach, a freshman at Warren Community College in Washington, New Jersey, received this unexpected reply to a recent email she sent the faculty at her school announcing the appearance of decorated Iraq war hero, Lt. Col. Scott Rutter, on Thursday, November 17 to discuss Americas accomplishments in Iraq. In the email, Daly told Rebecca that he will ask students in his English and writing classes to boycott the event and also vowed to expose [her] right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like [Rebeccas] wont dare show their face on a college campus. Dalys mean spirited and hateful comments were directed at Rebecca for organizing Lt. Col. Scott Rutter and for hanging up fliers contrasting the number of people killed under communism to those liberated under Ronald Reagan. Since Professor John Daly has created a hostile learning environment for Rebecca, she is demanding that Warren Community College President William Austin institute seminars on free speech and sensitivity to teach intolerant leftists, such as Daly, to be respectful of differing opinion Dalys insane email to Rebecca also claimed that CAPTIALISM has killed many more people than communism [emphasis his] and that the poor and working class people are recruited to fight and die for EXXON and other corporations. John Daly was hired to teach English, not to verbally attack students and lead leftist protests, said Jason Mattera, spokesman for Young Americas Foundation. The full unedited text of Dalys email follows.
November 13, 2005 Dear Rebecca: I am asking my students to boycott your event. I am also going to ask others to boycott it. Your literature and signs in the entrance lobby look like fascist propaganda and is extremely offensive. Your main poster "Communism killed 100,000,000" is not only untrue, but ignores the fact that CAPITALISM has killed many more and the evidence for that can be seen in the daily news papers. The U.S. government can fly to dominate the people of Iraq in 12 hours, yet it took them five days to assist the people devastated by huricane Katrina. Racism and profits were key to their priorities. Exxon, by the way, made $9 Billion in profits this last quarter--their highest proft margin ever. Thanks to the students of WCCC and other poor and working class people who are recruited to fight and die for EXXON and other corporations who earning megaprofits from their imperialist plunders. If you want to count the number of deaths based on political systems, you can begin with the more than a million children who have died in Iraq from U.S.-imposed sanctions and war. Or the million African American people who died from lack of access to healthcare in the US over the last 10 years. I will continue to expose your right-wing, anti-people politics until groups like your won't dare show their face on a college campus. Real freedom will come when soldiers in Iraq turn their guns on their superiors and fight for just causes and for people's needs--such freedom fighters can be counted throughout American history and they certainly will be counted again. Prof. John Daly
Keep sending emails, forwarding to friends, and calling... this has gathered steam on a national level. Ms. Beach was on Hannity and Loser last night, though she didn't get a lot of time due to the ass-kicking going on in the House.

"Is"? This guy is an English professor?! LOL!
Colleges are filled with people like this. They are educated idiots.
Education is fine, but it doesn't make you intelligent.
A monkey can learn if you spend enough time with it.
Not sure liberals are as smart as monkeys about some things.
The college has the press release on their HOME PAGE!
I think this guy is all but toast now.

Yes.
Since when does calling for murder and asassination fall under the protection of the First Amendment? The professor is certainly entitled to his opinion, but he is not entitled to advocate murder. Were he a conservative, this would be hate speech and there would be no "investigation" or sops to the First Ammendment. A Conservative would have been fired within seconds of sending the email.
Adjunct professor in a community college! Frankly, that's a pretty low rank. What it means in plain English is that the lowest level in the post high school system hires him to teach a couple of courses on a contract basis without benefits or claims to rank, tenure, seniority, etc. In other words, a bottom feeder, a real bottom feeder.
However, after his overheated solicitation of spontaneous treason and murder, he'll probably end up in some "Micro- Ivy" as a permanently disgruntled academic wage slave.
This prof has a TOUGH life! [ \ sarcasm ]

I think adjunct professor daly is in the process of finding out just how many people are on the far left fringe of the political spectrum where he thinks he isn't. I'll buy the ticket buddy, to any country of choice, but I don't think this one is right for your kind. Speaking of course to daly and not to snowrip. In fact, from a purely objective perspective, I'm almost sure you aren't going to find a country that beleives in such a dead doctrine as you so viciously espouse. Maybe a non country such as Palestine?
The biggest question I have is, at what point does one become a "Domestic Enemy" where they can be taken out with overwealming force?
Not only would they be off the campus, the police would be arriving within moments of such a message.
Yeah, you would think this is prosecutable. Especially if someone followed their advice.....inciting to violence.
Spelling or lack of, in the interest of one adjunct professor Daly.

Latest column: "What If the French Had Pulled a 'Murtha' in 1781?"
I hope so, but the only way to be sure is to keep this alive. That statement basically said that the college believes in free speech, ALL free speech, and that there will be an investigation of some sort. This is the text of my latest letter, sent to everyone on the above email list this morning (couldn't get all the italicized and highlighted areas contained in the actual email to show up here on FR, though):
Dr. Austin et al,
It is with extreme displeasure that I send this email, concerning your latest statement in regards to John Daly's intimidation of Rebecca Beach. Once again, the college has unexplainably seen fit to allow the behavior of Mr. Daly to go unchallenged. Instead of Mr. Daly's immediate suspension without pay, you again promise some sort of future investigation, but again provide no details or timetable whatsoever. To wit;
>>Dr. Austin said, I personally find Mr. Dalys e-mail disgraceful and offensive, yet I must maintain that the college be a place for free expression, ideas, and open debate.<<
However, what Mr. Daly did was attempt to forcibly stifle ANY and ALL expression, ideas, and debate that were contrary to his own utterly irrational position. He has used his position as an employee of your college to attack, bully, threaten and intimidate a freshman student. His behavior is not only odious, is is illegal and unacceptable on ANY LEVEL.
>>Dr. Austin added, We must remember that Mr. Daly is just one instructor out of many here. These are apparently his personal political views.<<
Mr. Daly admits that he is member of International ANSWER, a front organization for the Worker's World Party (WWP). The WWP supports and encourages, among other things, socialist revolution and the abolition of all private property. It is a champion of harsh socialist dictatorships around the world,
and has stated that Saddam Hussein is guilty of no wrongdoing. Mr. Daly has stated that "The administration at WCCC believes Rebecca Beach is an innocent student acting alone, but I recognized her literature right away as being part of a national right-wing movement. Her group is an ultra right-wing, possibly fascist, group."
Mr. Daly is acting as part of a group in what he sees as a war on facism. He is doing it conscientiously, without regard to any rules of college conduct or the rule of law.
>>The college will continue to keep its pulse on this issue while maintaining its high standards of professionalism and integrity of all concerned, noted Dr. Austin.<<
"Keep its pulse on this issue"...? To anyone out here in Reality World, that sounds like you are going to keep issuing lukewarm-sounding press statements while you continue to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING... while you wait to see if this affair just slips into the background.
I wish to be perfectly clear upon this point: By no stretch of the imagination will this issue go away until your college has followed its own regulations, as well as the laws of this country, and fired Instructor Daly from his position at your school.

Had this Professor called for making the college a Christian institution, you can imagine the rush to can his butt and throw him out on the street.
This guy is a slime. That fact that he is adjunct in an environment that LOVES commies like him means that he is lousy at teaching.
By the way, did you hear John Gibson skin this bastard on the Tony Snow show yesterday?
P.S. My son graduates from Marine Corps boot camp in 13 days. Signed Proud Dad.
Thanks
I just sent him this email
I just wanted to let you know that I am one person that fully supports you freedom of speech. I think it is foundational to this countrys culture and institututions that those freedoms enumerated in the constitution be guarded carefully. I encourage you to continue to express your views.
As a professor and activist Im sure you understand the consequences of expressing unpopular thoughts. I also think you provide an important voice because in order for people to understand the evils of the ideology you espouse, they need to hear about it under the scrutiny of free public discuss, rather than have it subtly indoctrinated in the classroom.
Thank you for your important contribution to freedom of speech and for helping America hear the voice of true American ideals rather than washed up communist ideology
Again thanks
