Congress Rejects Iraq Exit Bill

WASHINGTON — The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected calls for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, a vote engineered by Republicans that was intended to fail. Democrats derided the vote as a political stunt.

"Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Democratic hawk whose call a day earlier for pulling out troops sparked a nasty, personal debate over the war.

The House voted 403-3 to reject a nonbinding resolution offered by the GOP calling for the military to pull out of Iraq.

"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will not retreat," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said as the Republican leadership pushed the issue to a vote over the protest of Democrats.

Agreed, but We really fooled them (and the Tali ban) when We blasted them out of Afghanistan. It wasn't just launching 2 cruise missiles (Like slick Willy did) into 2 abandoned training camps. Let's surprise them again and bring into the middle east a country when the people run it, not the mullahs.

Agreed. I believe JD Hayworth will continue his efforts, and he's certainly one to watch in AZ when McCain finally retires.

I still have visions of the pictures of Marines on the ship that Clinton turned back because of thugs on the pier in Haiti.

During the Battle of the Little Bighorn, it is claimed that Major Reno(then commanding officer) put forth the option of withdrawing under the cover of darkness. This was to be expediated by LEAVING the wounded.

Fortunately for the wounded... and the 7th Cavalry's reputation, this was immediately shot down by Capt. Frederick Benteen(the 'functional' commanding officer).

My point being that even in the darkest of times(and we aren't there yet), cooler heads usually prevail.

"I believe JD Hayworth will continue his efforts..."

I've been very impressed with Hayworth's steadfastness. I'd love to see him replace McCain.

RATS with ethics problems? Murrymom, say it ain't so! (No wonder Pelosi ran away from Murtha's comments!) Maybe RAT Murtha knew bad things were coming his way and wanted to stir the pot before things got too hot -

GOP Lawmakers Float Ethics Probe of Murtha
Roll Call ^ | Friday, Nov. 18 | John Bresnahan

Republican lawmakers say that ties between Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) and his brother's lobbying firm, KSA Consulting, may warrant investigation by the House ethics committee...

According to a June 13 article in The Los Angeles Times, the fiscal 2005 defense appropriations bill included more than $20 million in funding for at least 10 companies for whom KSA lobbied. Carmen Scialabba, a longtime Murtha aide, works at KSA as well.

KSA directly lobbied Murtha's office on behalf of seven companies, and a Murtha aide told a defense contractor that it should retain KSA to represent it, according to the LA Times.

In early 2004, Murtha reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city of San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. A company called Lennar Inc. had right to the land, and Laurence Pelosi, nephew to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was an executive with the firm at that time.

Murtha also inserted earmarks in defense bills that steered millions of dollars in federal research funds toward companies owned by children of fellow Pennsylvania Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D).

The Iraqi media coverage of this vote will be a devastating psychological blow to the insurgency.

They don't know jack about nuance. When they see 403-3, the insurgents are going to be shocked. They have very little idea about how our process works at that level, so they'll interpret that to mean our government is united.

That message will shatter the moral of Al Qaida in Iraq, which has been clinging to life on the hope that they just need to wait us out. Now, the rug has been pulled out from under that hope. This vote will convince many of them that there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

So, inadvertently, the Democrats have been used as a potent psychological weapon against our enemies. Right now is a crucial time in history, for the war, and for the future of the Middle East. This vote will be felt harder than a thousand JDAMs, and moves us much closer to victory.

That's a very good idea. That's a UN Peace Keeping force, yes? Maybe get Bolton to make a proposal.

As a marine is serving, there is but one code "Siemper Fie" !

When a solder removes the uniform for the last time, they become a citizen again and can then criticize the government again. But NEVER, I repeat NEVER bring up the Corp (or any military service) again without living "Siemper Fie" !

JD is my congressman. My son graduated from Boot Camp on October 7. While on home for his 10 day leave, we were having dinner at Mastro's Steakhouse. JD and his wife Mary came to our table and thanked my son for his service. He is a wonderful man. We are proud to have him in Congress. I hope the country will rally behind the Republican Congress and support them in 2006.

I, too, wish he would replace McPain.

Whenever I saw a "Veterans for Kerry" sticker or shirt, I always wondered if the guy was NVR or VC.

Totally agree with your take on terrorist reaction to last night. They were probably flying high listening to most of what was said by Democrats, but then the vote came...

Complete deflation of their balloon. Thank God!
