WASHINGTON The House on Friday overwhelmingly rejected calls for an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq, a vote engineered by Republicans that was intended to fail. Democrats derided the vote as a political stunt.
"Our troops have become the enemy. We need to change direction in Iraq," said Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Democratic hawk whose call a day earlier for pulling out troops sparked a nasty, personal debate over the war.
The House voted 403-3 to reject a nonbinding resolution offered by the GOP calling for the military to pull out of Iraq.
"We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will not retreat," Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., said as the Republican leadership pushed the issue to a vote over the protest of Democrats.

News last night also said the old Camp Sheehan is closed off and they cannot use it anymore. They're complaining about free speech rights but the people who live around there are insisting they have rights too, and the leftists were interfering with their rights of access to their property.
Yes, I was very proud of JD!!
Well, we in Arizona have to make up for the embarrassment of our RINO senior senator!
Go JD!
Alliances change. Last election I met a guy wearing a Veterans for Kerry shirt with a Teachers Union button on it. Clearly, his interests changed from being a vet to being a pawn of the teachers union.
What? The DUmmies are passing out drinks from an evil corporate sponsor. :^)
Here's how the DUmmies are trying to spin last night's vote...
"The republican sponsored vote to cut and run from Iraq IMMEDIATELY was soundly defeated by the democrats yesterday."
Today they are trying to argue they only wanted to start a *planning* discussion for how to withdraw in an *orderly* fashion. Yeah, right.
Oops.... Forgot about that. LOL
Republicans suffer embarrassing defeat!
The republican sponsored vote to cut and run from Iraq IMMEDIATELY was soundly defeated by the democrats yesterday. The proposal was a cowardly and treasonous idea, taking Rep. John Murtha's (D-Pennsylvania) reasoned proposal to begin redeployment of US troops over a 6 month period and issuing their own for an immediate pullout without any consideration to the safety of American troops or the fragile future of the new Iraqi republic.
Please pass the word far and wide!
Right. Democrats just wanted to "talk" about it, and "discuss" it. As in, let's blame the Republicans some more. Their move was transparent and they cannot avoid their just deserts.
The money for the DIMS from the lunatics will be drying up very soon.
I just saw it! LOL!
Most Americans wanted to finish WWII back in the 40's. No one wants war to continue on and on.
You didn't see Eisenhower or anyone else having to go before congress to expose THE NORMANDY PLAN!
This is insanity.
"Right. Democrats just wanted to "talk" about it, and "discuss" it. As in, let's blame the Republicans some more. Their move was transparent and they cannot avoid their just deserts."
Let's just hope that the GOPers who came up with this strategy keep the pressure on. The 5th columnists are back on their heels. We need to keep pushing.
Actually, I think much of this whole exercise has been to placate their supporters who have complained about Democrats not moving to impeach President Bush. Rush talked about this some time ago.
"The Sunday talk show hosts had undoubtedly planned on filling their air time with long discussions about Murtha, his call to withdraw, and how many would follow the call.
Now all they can talk about is a mass rejection BY DEMOCRATS of Murha's proposal.
A lot of dead air coming your wy this Sunday..."
Oh you are so right, they had it all planned out in advance with speeches by Murtha all over the airwaves to cut and run. Now Murtha is odd man out and the story is Republican spine. The Senate Repubs need to shove something similar down Reid's throat. How about a resolution that George Bush lied to the American public. The Dems have been salivating about impeachment, call their bluff now.
Congressman Sam Johnson, the last Republican to speak in the debate, got some headlines in the mind of anyone who watched the debate last evening.
Congressman Johnson was a fighter pilot in Korea and Vietnam, a prisoner of war in Vietnam for 7 years, in solitary confinement for half of those seven years. Johnson was awarded two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, one Bronze Star with Valor, two Purple Hearts, four Air Medals, and three Outstanding Unit Awards.
Sam Johnson spoke for approximately 5 minutes after receiving a standing ovation from everyone in the House of Reps. and put the final nail in the Democrat attempts to use Murtha's military record to surrender.
